Movie with a woman who has colon cancer.

Postby cptmac » Sun Jul 22, 2012 5:46 pm

Terminal colon cancer

A Little Bit of Heaven

The film follows the life of easy-going career woman Marley Corbett (Kate Hudson), who finds love with her doctor Julian Goldstein (Gael García Bernal) after discovering she has terminal colon cancer.

I'm glad that people are talking about it.

I loved the movie. It seemed to represent my life. Lol... A young, single career woman and my two best friends in this world are a black man and a red headed woman.. I swear I though it was me. But with a new ending

After receiving bad news at my oncologist appt., I was driving home and decided to pick up a movie to take my mind off things. I thought Kate Hudson, should be a cute, romantic comedy. I wish it would have explained more of what the movie was about on the cover. It was done well but very hard for me to watch. I guess it was just very bad timing.

I know exactly how you felt - wish they would have warned us. When the doctor asked if she had blood in her stool, I thought "oh-oh". Made me sick - I was not ready to see a movie like that.

First I thought the subject line meant you went to a movie with a woman who has colon cancer.

Anyway, glad they made this movie since the idea is not the typical female with a female-type problem movie.

I loved the movie. I watched it with my husband but did warn him first. It actually spurred some good conversation between us.

I liked it. And I kind of want to go out the way she did if it ever gets to that point. "Mourn me not in my death but celebrate the life I lived." -As the saying goes.

Looks like she died, going by one posters remark. I can't tolerate t.v. commercials about cancer right now, so I won't be watching it!

"A Little Bit of Heaven" with Kate Hudson.

I've just noticed that this is available on the so-called BoxOffice selection which is part of my satellite TV service. The idea is that you can choose from a selection of new releases for an additional R25 per movie (about $3, a big mac costs R20 here). This is over and above the normal monthly subscription fee, which is around $80/month. I consider the BoxOffice to be a bit of a rip-off.

Is it worth paying $3 to watch?

Based on this thread, I got it through Netflix. It's a sweet movie, and I enjoy Kate Hudson. Typical Hollywood sugar coating of this disease. She doesn't have any surgery. She tries chemo, but it doesn't work (of course, she doesn't lose or hair or get rashes). For a short time she does a trial study, but stops. Her work has a million dollar insurance policy she can cash out on - so no money worries. They show her doing the prep for the colonoscopy, but doesn't deal with any other bathroom issues. She falls in love with her doctor, and of course they have romantic evenings. Don't know about you guys, but going through treatment - romance is the last thing on my mind. There are some good moments - like how friends and families deal with someone who has this disease. I didn't find the ending so bad. Whoopi always makes me smile - and who doesn't like a Mardi Gras party?

Ashlee, I wish there was a like button. I loved your analysis on the movie, I felt the same way. And I loved the male character "the escort)

Gotta say Ashlee, I have not yet watched the flix but based on your comments, I will NetFlick it into the schedule.
There are some good moments - like how friends and families deal with someone who has this disease.
Here's why : every time a "terminal" scene or a "dealing with cancer scene" comes on the tube... wifey says "Are you Ok with this ?"
I AM, and grateful to have her consider my feelings...but you gotta understand..... WE, here, deal with all this shit hour by hour, day to day, year to year......ALL the mofo time. Nothing new.

We like Kate Hudson ( have been involved with Kurt and Goldie's son during his hockey days up here...luv'em BOTH ! and the son is a legit hockey player !!!)

My fave movie about a kind of nihilistic "patient" experience was Peter Falk & Jill Clayburgh “Griffin and Phoenix: A Love Story” ... saw it many Many MANY years ago...(yes I am that old  ) It was not really a surprise ending...but NOT an unexpected ending.

I do not know why that particular reference has stayed with me all these years, because that was Waaaaaayyy before my cancer... but it just did.

So, if Kate kind of gives it her own take....damn fine.

Reviews at 11.

I thought it was a good movie (sorry CRguy, it's not on NetFlix yet). I did get frustrated with her medical treatment, wasn't very realistic but that wasn't the point of the movie anyway.
It's just about a woman learning to finally 'live' when she finds out she's dying, basically a 'chick flick', boy gets girl, girl dies and it just happened to be colon cancer or as she says in the
movie, "cancer of the ass".
