5 years ago today!!

Postby weisssoccermom » Fri Apr 20, 2012 5:30 pm

Well, FIVE years ago today I had my surgery - my last treatment! Five years of being clean, no problems, nothing, nada!
A few months back when I was scheduling all of my appts, it truthfully didn't dawn on me that today was a special day (at least it is for me!). Surgeon was ecstatic - said I really didn't need to keep coming in every 6 months - I could stretch those 'look see' appts out or even stop them but....told her I'm not sure if I'm quite ready for that yet so she told me I could call the shots about the timing (probably will continue the 6 month for now). At any rate, she said she really didn't think I needed any more scans (GP concurs) and since my onc has 'retired' (his own cancer came back) and I don't really want to break in a new onc, I'm taking my surgeon's advice. She didn't feel I needed to keep getting CEAs every 3 months as well - her opinion is to have one done every 6 months. I even set up my next scope for Dec 27th...no time yet but at least I have the date and the anesthesiologist requested for propofol administration.

I am giddy- no more scans, no more onc appts, fewer CEA tests and oh yeah, after this scope (unless some yucky results), I get to 'graduate' to 5 year scope plan. As a side note, I asked her if she truly felt that a 10 year period between scans ( for people with no risk factors) was advisable and her reply was an emphatic NO! Her response was that this 'theoretical' 10 year to turn cancerous timeframe was just that - theoretical. She would like to see the guidelines changed to every 5 years.

Anyway, good day in our house! Hoping all of you are enjoying some well deserved good news as well!

Hugs Jaynee ,I'm glad you have made the big five and I hope you can put some of the baggage of cancer behind you . Most of all I wish you good health ,from bitter experience I know that being ca free does not mean that health is a given. Good luck Ron.
