Today is our son's 4th birthday, so it's certainly a day to celebrate -- but it will also always be remembered in our family as the day two years ago that Staci finally came home from the hospital after a 3 week stay. Talk about a great birthday present for our youngest!

Her surgery was November 20, so it's technically two years plus three weeks that she's been NED -- verified by scans and a scope two weeks ago that was perfectly clear!

NED Since Feb 13, 2007

Diagnosed Stage 3B on Oct 18, 2006. Did 6 weeks Xeloda and Radiation followed by a resection of the tumor. I was treated at MD Anderson by a very good surgeon. I had a bag for six weeks and after the takedown of that I had no further treatment. I take a tablespoonful of Flaxseed oil every morning and 2000mg of Coriolus VPS (Mushroom Extract). I have become a vegetarian because it agrees with my guts. It took me two and a half years to get my guts stable after having the bag removed. I had a couple of sigmoidoscopies that were clean and I do a CEA test once a year. I am not looking for signs of disease because I don't expect them. I am extremely healthy and back to my former self now five years later. AFAIK, I am cured. That is my view of it.

My CT scan last Friday was clean but my blood tests had gone missing. They've just been emailed through and my CEA has dropped. I don't know whether there is any connection but my glucose level has dropped from 12.4 to 7.5 ( still high, but I am on medication for late onset diabetes ) and my cholesterol has dropped from 5.8 to 3.3 ( thanks to Lipitor). All clear for another 6 months.

Excellent , I see your soon approaching your 5th year too , so many people on here beyond 5 years now . Some even 15 /20 and even 26 years out but some people keep saying there is no cure ??? Surely this is classed as cured or as near as you can get to it ??

I had four swollen nodes but no positives and they took 29 out. There was no metastasis but the tumor was very large and that supposedly determined the poor prognosis the doctors gave me.

They say once you've had cancer, you never truly get rid of it simply because your body is able to let it happen again (some saying that goes something like that). Because I've reached the 5 year mark, some people (Drs included) say I am cured. I've also been told, because I had rectal cancer, I really need to hit the 10 year mark to be "cured". And still other will tell me, I'm in remission only, that my body can still produce cancer. I like to think as time goes on my chances (odds) of having it come back get smaller and smaller.

I know a person who was diagnosed with breast cancer. She survived it. 25 years later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer again. She is fine today. Somehow they were able to determine that the 2nd round of cancer was a new cancer and not a reoccurence of the cancer from 25 yrs ago. Monitoring and follow ups are one of our best defense in dealing with cancer.

So in correct in thinking it is curable in some situations after a certain time period has elapsed ? The onc and surgeon said to my husband that there's a 50 percent chance he's already cured by surgery alone but doing chemo will bump him up to the 70 percent mark , but don't they say cancer is in each and everyone of us and it just takes a certain something to trigger it ??

Dear All,

I have never posted but am a daily visitor to this amazing site for quite a few months.
As my name suggests, I am husband of a loving wife 26, (aged 25 at the time of her Diagnose). I am happy to announce that her first yearly colonoscopy, CT and blood tests all came back normal yesterday...... Diagnosed on 24th January, 2011 in China, STAGE 3 B, with 3/29 Nodes Positive (although I really don’t know whether she is 3 C or 3 B, since her Path reports says that her 7/29 lymph nodes had metastasis and 3 were cancerous nodes!! Chinese translated to English), Lynch Synd. Colon Resection 28th January, 2011. Flofox finished Aug 2011.
The toughest year of our lives!! Diagnosed with Colon Cancer a month after our wedding!!!
Lots of Prayers, amazing Supports from our families from both sides, Traditional Chinese medicines and invaluable tips from this forum and CSN forum is bringing the worst year of our lives to an end. I hope, wish and pray we never see another year like this in our lives ever again.
Best of luck to all of you. May we have a CURE for this disease for all the stages soon.......
