How to raise Platelet Count?

Postby LeeT » Wed Mar 23, 2011 9:47 am

So had another delay yesterday- first it was my WBC causing havoc now that I have that under control with Neupogen the FOLFOX has gone and destroyed my platelets- the count was 61 yesterday! Is there anything that I can take to increase the numbers- my onc says rest and a few days delay should fix it....

One way of combatting low platelets is via diet - organic tomatoes, berries, beets, dark squashes, omega-3 rich fatty fishes like salmon and tuna, and red meat.

Notice a theme? those are all red foods, too, so it's easy to remember how to boost those platelet counts!

I don't really think there is any proven foods to increase your platelets. There are some sites that say Papaya leaves can do this but it's not proven. If you need to increase your overall blood counts: Eat beans or legumes, spinach and other dark green leafy vegetables, fruits (the darker the color the better).

With chemo, time off of it will increase your platelet. Until then, be careful that you don't cut yourself!

A week off of my FOXFOL did the trick. Just be very careful not to do anything that might cause you to bleed like cutting nails, shaving, using tools or knives or contact sports until they come on up.
Colonoscopy 3/10 for ? hemmorrhoid.
Diag Colon Cancer 3 days later
Colon Ressection 3/30/10

I was having a problem with my platelets as well and one of my Dr.s told me to take a teaspoon of seasme seed oil 3 x a day and also rub some on your inner wrist( to absorb into your body) i know it sounds wierd but it did increase my platelets.

I danced around the room naked while playing the tambourine and singing "Oh, Susannah" and a week later, my platelets were back to normal.

Seriously, I had to delay treatments twice while on Folfox and my oncologists told me there was nothing with proven ability to increase platelet counts. Usually, a single week week off treatment does the trick.

By all means, eat healthy, lots of fruits and veggies( more colorful the better ), salmon, etc. Avoid alcohol and aspirin. It may not do anything for your platelets, but it can't hurt and it is very good for your overall health .

Peace

It's a bit chilly to dance around naked here...but I have a tamborine and some comfy pj's- that might work :D
