Postby janette » Thu Jan 11, 2007 10:30 am

Hi my mom has a bag, and we found out she has a ulcer by her stoma, well anyways she is having major leakage problems, and even saw a specialist about it. They are trying to do thier best, but its always leaking. I feel really bad for her. Any suggestions? Thanks

Does she have an ileostomy or colostomy? I experienced problems with my colostomy leaking and switched to a convex flange. I also frame my flange with waterproof tape to keep the shower from softening things up. You also have to be careful about the soap you use. Some will loosen your flange.

In addition to the convex flange there are these things called stomadhesive moldable adhesive strips (they're made by Convatec and the order number is 025542). You put them under the flange, and they provide an additional layer of protection. They do make the pouch pop out a bit from the skin.

I also use skin-bond adhesive cement on my skin, right around the stoma, before applying the pouch; just use a thin layer and let it dry for several seconds. It makes the pouch difficult to take off when I'm changing it, but there are these items called adhesive remover wipes that help (you just have to make sure to clean the oily residue off afterwards).

If your mom's skin is getting messed up because of the leakage, it's a good idea for her to use stomadhesive paste to protect it (it stings, but it has helped my skin heal). As you can see, I've had lots of leakage problems, too! But all of the above seems to work for me.

Good luck to your mom!

If the hernia near the stoma makes her unable to use a convex flange, she might consider trying Micro Skin products. I am a person who should use a convex flange, but I tried Micro Skin and it works really well when it is new (she might need to change the flange more often than normal to keep it working well). Micro Skin products and thin and very flexible and the conform to the shape of the body. Just a thought, it might be worth calling Cymed and asking for some samples. Good luck.

Cymed -Platinum Series one-piece 76422

Hollister -first Choice 3681 (convexity & belt)

I alternate between these two - the latter wnen I need convesity to make stoma stick out)

Both companies will be happy to send you free samples-numbers will vary with stoma size. Cymed products almost never leak; the owner has an ostomy, and developed the product out of dissatisfaction with other appliances.
