Cyberknife or SBRT for lung mets

Postby Annajane » Fri Mar 26, 2021 8:54 am

Hello everyone

I've been told I have too many lung mets for microwave ablation. I haven't yet been given details. Could I have cyberknife or similar, or would the same rules apply?

Any other options? I wondered about laser lung surgery, but I'm not sure if it's available in the UK.

I'm 38, mum of 3, otherwise healthy and free of disease.

Good morning Anna,

I remember reading that 8 or so is the maximum number of lung mets that will get tacked by something other than systemic chemo, at least in the US. I think there's someone in Germany who will go after a larger number of mets surgically, but I am forgetting the details now... My husband had a multitude of tiny (<5mm) mets in both lungs, too many to address with SBRT or similar; but chemo (Folfiri + Avastin) worked great for him.

Hi Annajane,

SBRT or similar could be a possibility but it really depends on the number, size and location of the mets. Can you give us a rough idea what you’re dealing with here in this regard?

Thanks, Rob

Hi everyone, thanks for responding. I finally have more information! (Oncologist was on holiday)

I should say, I was diagnosed January 2019 with rectal cancer and multiple bilateral lung metastases. Had colostomy, 12 x FOLFIRI, then 8 lung mets were ablated. Pelvic radiotherapy, then all seemed clear. But was quickly back in lungs and rectum. 6 x FOLFOX. Resection of bowel. They were GOING to ablate my lung mets BUT then an expert spotted more tiny ones growing, making a total of 6, all quite small.

I'm going back on FOLFOX plus Avastin. Just hoping there will still be a way to get to NED!

Kind regards

Anna
