In NH, those over 65 are getting vaccinations. Our vaccine supply has tripled this week though.

I'm in the 50-65 category and we can start making resrvations March 22 for vaccinations starting March 25. I have no doubt that actually getting one will probably be more like late April or May as I expect to see an absolute crush for the online reservation system.

Last week they opened up vaccination to the 60+ age group in Maine. I was lucky enough to get an appointment on Friday the 5th for the first vaccination. The second one will be on March 26th.

Just a question for you Stu :

any further discussions where you are, concerning the recent blood clots issue from the AZ vaccine ?
We are hearing it was associated with just one particular vaccine batch and the numbers present as similar to the general population with other vaccines. We are also hearing that seniors here would not get the AZ ... BUTT that apparently has been reversed as of today ????

Hi ,

They have made a statement that it is safe and “ no prove causal link between the blood clots and the vaccine “ . To be fair literally millions of us in the U.K. have had it . The elderly population mostly got AZ as it so much easier for storage in the GP practices as far as I am aware ! Most have had no reaction whatsoever. However now we are getting to younger age groups more are reporting a rough 24 hours . Not sure if there is any science behind it but the it does seem as though the elderly population tolerated it better ! But it might just be the way it’s been reported.
We have administered nearly 26 million so a reasonable sample within that number . Europe have just given the green light to start using it again .

Also delaying the second dose seems to be paying off and the death rate in the 80 plus group from covid has plummeted. Our schools have just started to filter back so I expect a bit of a rise with that but it’s been so encouraging to see the numbers come down .
How is the vaccination program going in Canada ?

take care ,

NH opened appointments to everyone yesterday. I had to reschedule my second dose because Walgreens screwed up and they don't have second appointments available. I found something but it's not ideal. First dose of Pfizer this past Thursday. My arm was sore Thursday night until Friday afternoon. It was quite annoying as I have Golfer's Elbow in the right arm so I had to consider carefully in picking something up or doing something above my shoulder.

I schedule the second appointment on a day when I have nothing else scheduled for two days in case I wind up with the flu-like symptoms for a day or two.

Both my husband and I have had both shots of Pfizer with nothing more troubling that a day's worth of sore upper arm. Same thing for my mother, who is 98. As of yesterday it has been two weeks since my second shot, so I'm good to go, so to speak. :D Feels liberating.

Hey everyone,

UPDATE: My husband received the results of his on-going vaccine clinal trial. They took a sample of his blood 1 month post 2nd dose (mRNA Moderna) and the level of his antibodies are good.

According to the letter received, the amount is sufficient to offer good protection. He has about 1.5k BAU/ml.

Convalescent adults usually have a reading (≥ 33.8 BAU/mL). The higher the concentration corresponds to the level of protection which seem to also directly correlate with efficacy of the vaccine.

Since my husband is still on maintenance chemo, the good news is, it doesn’t seem to affect the vaccine’s ability to offer protection. I hope this is encouraging news to all of you too.

I’ll keep everyone posted once he received the results of his next blood test in a few months.

Take care :)

Thank you for sharing this. That is really great to hear.
I'm just a dude who still can't believe he had a resection and went through chemo (currently 12 years NED). Is this real life?

This is great to hear, and I doubt too many folks on here need a note of caution in this area. But perhaps it’ll be useful for someone. With respect to immune response to vaccines, including the wonderful mRNA vaccines, responses are very variable, so one person’s case is mostly relevant for that person, and not applicable to everybody. In this case, while the literature I’ve seen supports expectation of strong vaccine response in solid tumor patients, there are LOTS of variables. For example, antibody level indicators alone may not establish optimal or sufficient protection, protective levels of response may vary with the emergence of new variants (e.g., the currently dominant Delta variant, which is far more infectious than previous versions), will definitely vary by individual, may vary by type and stage of chemo, and may wane over time (or may not). We also won’t always see new, more vaccine-evasive variants until they are at least somewhat dispersed. In other words, this is a hopeful story, but I at least would urge continued caution in a community like this one until and unless vaccination levels increase in the general population (thus reducing community spread to lower levels).

Absolutely. We never took for granted and have not even gone to a indoor restaurant for 1.5 years. My husband still wears a face mask when meeting even fully vaccinated colleagues because it’s the responsible thing to do. Every individual is different, healthy ones included. This study is mainly comparing those undergoing cancer treatment vs healthy adults. There is a cohort whom are undergoing immunotherapy too. The results will be published next year (it’s a 1 year study).

President Biden ordered another 200 million Pfizer vaccine doses to be delivered from Fall to Spring. These are in anticipation of EUA for children under 12 and potentially for booster shots for immunocompromised adults.

Pfizer and Moderna are also working on boosters targeted at the newer variants. It's unfortunate that both are called boosters as they mean different things depending on the context.

Hello everyone,

Sorry I haven’t been logging on as much (due to personal reasons) but here’s an update on my husband’s vaccine trial.

More than a month ago, my husband had his blood drawn to test the level of antibodies, and about 2 weeks ago, the hospital called and invited him for his 3rd shot. In the Netherlands, the gov only recently started inviting the 80s or high risk group. So he’s going to be the first few who will have access to the 3rd shot.

They haven’t revealed the level of his antibodies (6 months post second shot) but they informed him based on the results of this study, those undergoing chemo is recommended to get another shot. Sorry in know this very vague as we’ve tried multiple times to ask for further details and have not received a clear response. I’ll definitely update once we get more info.

This is the trial :
