I think Lee is right. Different countries have different regulations and procedures, especially for accessing personal medical records.

Where DE lives it is basically a paper-based system. Hospitals in New Brunswick don't have electronic health records (EHR) systems and they don't have the patient internet portals that many of the U.S. hospitals have. Everything there is done the old-fashioned way with paper reports, faxes, reports delivered by post (not by e-mail) etc.

Apparently there are ways to obtain patient records if the patient follows the rules of the health care bureaucracy there. For example, in DE's city there are about half a dozen hospitals using the paper system there, and the procedure for obtaining release of the records is described here:

https://en.horizonnb.ca/home/facilities-and-services/services/other-services/personal-health-records.aspx

In particular, it is necessary for the patient to fill out and submit the authorization form below in order to gain special, early access.

2020 Authorization for Release of Personal Health Information

When can I expect to receive test results?

"Our laboratory works to provide health care providers test results in a timely manner. Most routine test results are ready within 24 hours of collection. Specialized testing may take longer, sometimes up to two weeks to one month. Results are not provided directly to the patient unless the health care provider has made arrangements for the patient to receive and self-monitor as in INR testing to monitor blood-thinning medicines. Therefore, you can expect to receive test results from your health care provider."

You hang around here long enough, you learn a few things. And DE is correct, you had no way of knowing. And you are not the first. I've done it a few times myself  . As a few other people. I posted that comment in case others who chime in with same idea as your. Through the years, I have felt her frustration.

My blood tests must have been normal because when I called my family doctor's office her receptionist said that she had her put the results in my file. She only does that when they are normal. I only get a phone call if the results aren't normal. I have to wait until January 5th for a telephone appointment with my family doctor. I don't think she will be any help because she doesn't like to run a lot of tests. I had ischemic colitis symptoms last night and I'm still cramping today. My period always makes everything worse! My GI won't call back and neither will my endocrinologist! I am beyond frustrated!

Thank you Lee! I'm feeling really frustrated! That's the predominant emotion when it comes to dealing with our healthcare system.
