Polyps after CRC

Postby boxhill » Tue Nov 10, 2020 12:47 pm

Yesterday I had my first colonoscopy after diagnosis, in fact my first since 2010, when it was completely clear. She found and removed 2 sessile polyps, both "benign in appearance." 4mm in the rectum, and 8mm in the descending colon. Both were sent to pathology. My cancer is thought to have resulted from a sessile polyp in the hepatic flexure.

It honestly never occurred to me that I might have polyps or, worst case, a recurrence, in the colon. I've spent so much energy worrying about mets in the liver and lymph nodes!

I'm not seriously worried...yet. But this feels weird.

Pathology results are supposed to be delivered by mail in 10 days. So I guess no news is good news until then.

I get scoped every 3 yrs, & yes they usually find 1 to 2 polyps each time. Guess my body likes to produce them. Generally harmless but a few nasty ones. From what I understand, it generally takes about 10 yrs for a sessile polyp to turn cancerous. If (& that is a big IF) one of those polyp turns out to be cancerous, it would probably be a very early stage. Easily treatable. I suspect you are going to be okay.

Good luck,

I am now in my 8th year since diagnosis (or very close to it) and I was put on 3 year colonoscopies. Last one I had 3, 2 benign and one pre cancerous so I'm back on yearly.
Definitely got to keep getting them done!

My mom had her first colonoscopy since diagnosis/treatment this past June and they found 5! All benign but it put her on a yearly schedule. I was reminded that with her very first colonoscopy where her cancer was caught, her tumor was so low that they only completed like a few cm before finding it and stopped the procedure because they couldn’t get past it—so who knows how long these polyps have been there!

I am just glad they are out and that she’s going yearly now.

Hopefully the results come back negative. I can imagine how disconcerting and worried this must make people feel. I guess the best thing is at least you got the colonoscopy and what they found was sent off for results. Hoping for the best

Thanks, everyone.

I'm trying not to think about it. Back to my motto: don't freak out until you know you have something to freak out about. :)
