Sigmoid colon large tumor

Postby Lilly2020 » Thu Oct 08, 2020 1:54 am

Hi Everyone,
I've recently found out I have a cancerous mass in or on or around the Signoid Colon area, no measurements were given. When the colonospy was done one month ago today they couldn't get past the mass with the instrument, at this stage I do not know what stage its at or what type of surgery is needed as they said they are unsure until the day, or even if I will need a stoma bag, I'm not even sure about Chemo yet. My surgery is on Monday! and I am terrified, there is so much I don't know. I have been a mess for the past month and cannot seem to focus. I'm going to try and concentrate on one thing at a time, so for now it's the operation and that is very much freaking me out. Please help me put my mind at ease as I fear I will go crazy soon. Thanks Lilly.

Welcome to the forum, Lilly2020. No one ever wants to be here, but it's provided many with support and comfort in difficult times, and answers to many questions.
All I want to say is - as scary as the surgery you're about to undergo may feel, focus on the positive: you will have answers afterwards, and the mass will be out of your body! My husband had 3 surgeries so far, and all went very well.
Sending good vibes your way for Monday - please keep us posted XXXXX

Hi Lily – My Wife just had a Colonoscopy last week. She has a large sigmoid colon mass located approx. 15cm from her anal verge. Due to the size of tumor and surrounding edema, they were unable to advance the scope pass the tumor.

With this all being said, National Institute of Health took out a 5cm tumor from her bottom left lung also last week. Once she recovers from lung surgery, they will then go after the colon tumor. So… the tumor being up 15cm from the anal verge, they feel there will be no need for a colostomy bag at all. (So a bag requirement depends where the tumor is located and how much damage the tumor did and can be seen on the colon itself). It's a case by case basis.

I'm sorry for your diagnosis and I hope your surgery goes well.*hugs* My best word of advice is to walk as much as possible after surgery because it helps to get the bowels working again.

Hi Lilly,

I am sorry to hear you have been diagnosed with cancer and it is causing you anxiety. I am not really the person to be giving advice about anxiety, but I can try to help. Have confidence in your surgeon and the medical staff. If you can find an activity to distract you, perhaps it would take your mind off things for a bit. I don't know if you like to watch movies or enjoy reading. If you are able to leave the house, a brisk walk works wonders. Sometimes a drive in the car can help.

Hope this helps! Do you know what type of surgery you are having? I did have a ileostomy bag. Once I got over the initial shock of it, I realized it wasn't a big deal.

There are some wonderful people on this forum. If you have questions, please reach out to the folks on here.

Have a great weekend! Sending a hug!

Aloha Lilly!
I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I had a sigmoidectomy in mid July. I did not end up having any bag. I was out of the hospital in 4 days. The staging will be done when they retrieve information on how its penetrated your walls and if there's any metastasis and after checking the lymph nodes in the area. Hoping all is well thus far, we all are here to support you!

Hi, I'm also new to this site (unfortunately!) I was diagnosed with stage IV b adenocarcinoma two years ago. I started with chemo then went to surgery.

You just have to trust in your doctors and nursing specialists. If you're religious, pray! Also, if you can lean on your GP, so much the better. Get hold of a local support group if you can. Ask questions and if necessary, take a pen and paper and write down the answers (I found I was in too much of a state to take in the information they were throwing at me). Take advantage of anything "extra" that anyone offers you, and don't be afraid to ask for help (rides to hospital, someone to sit with you during chemo, someone to visit you after the operation, meals at home, whatever your situation demands). Be specific when people offer help (I hate, 'anything I can do, just let me know!')

Remember, no situation lasts forever. Things will change (please God, for the better!) Wishing you much luck with your surgery, please post how it goes.
