How to Find a Good Oncologist

Postby 4us4 » Sat Aug 22, 2020 12:26 pm

When I first got diagnosed (1year+ ago) everything happened so quickly I never “shopped around” for an oncologist... I just took the default and She was okay-ish. Anyway, she moved a couple months ago (not worth following) and I got stuck with her replacement (who is not great), but I’ve been staying with him because he is local and it was just for monitoring.

After yesterday’s CT, it appears the cancer is back in my lungs and a lymph node is large in my abdomen. I really need a better oncologist to help me steer this ship... but don’t even know how to do that. I met with one onc my GI recommended, but he was SO NOT hopeful about my diagnosis that I don’t really want to go back... Even though he WAS definitely smarter. It’s lots of work to gather up records to “try out” oncologists. I need a better strategy.

So I guess here is what I’m wondering:
-Is there a list of stellar oncologist here on this forum? (Did a search but could not find)
-anyone at a big cancer center who loves their oncologist? I think the big places meet via telemedicine & consult with my local oncologist?
-anyone in Oregon who loves their oncologist?

Thanks!!
-Kelsi

I’m sorry about the latest news, but great idea to bring in the big guns now! I don’t have a specific oncologist recommendation but when in doubt it never hurts to start with an NCI-designated cancer centre. Depending on where you are in Oregon this could be:

Knight Cancer Institute
Oregon Health and Science University
Portland, Oregon
Comprehensive Cancer Center

Fred Hutchinson/University of Washington Cancer Consortium
Seattle, Washington
Comprehensive Cancer Center

Good luck,
Rob
