PSK supplements

Postby beach sunrise » Thu Aug 20, 2020 3:08 pm

I don't want to alarm anyone or cause any stress but if you take Turkey Tail, or some others, check with your supplier to make sure they can accommodate your needs in the near future. I found a supply disruption with the PSK I take and had to find another source. Just FYI for all of you on mushroom supplements.

Thanks, I just had a tub of Turkey Tail powder delivered by iHerb; will keep an eye on that one! If people are looking around they seem to be ok at the moment.

Good to know. Thanks Rob! I have a question: Since you use the powdered type, how do you take it? In coffee or what? I ordered powder for the 1st time the other day. It says you can put in beverages. Then I read it could leave a sediment at bottom?

The major indicator of useful quantity and quality for PSK, is the assayed % beta-glucans content to get actual beta-glucan content. The major therapeutic PSK versions have ranged about 30% - 45%. Lower is not better. PSP is a different creature.

Loose PSK powder is more vulnerable to storage conditions including humidity so be warned. Even the caps age in unopened bottles across several years, although I am not sure how much that affects performance.

Beta-glucans. Not polysaccharides [includes starches and celluloses], not to include alpha-glucans.

Good to know! Thank you, rp! I guess I will keep it at work as the humidity is controlled or maybe the freezer at home?

I haven't stored PSK powder myself.

For high humidity with other highly sensitive items, I have used multiple overpacks.
Say a large, less permable plastic/metal outer jar, sealed. Flimsy plastic bag around that in the freezer.
Then heavy, ziplocked freezer bags inside the main container with silica gels packs alongside the sealed glass vials or (re)sealed, leftover plastic lined foil packs. Sometimes I nitrogen purge, too.

Obviously, I aim to recover this infrequently, with intermediate storage series for 6-18 months.

For recovery:
Thaw, fully equilibrated to room temperature, with any water condensate wiped off AND air-dried out, before messing with the contents (in a lower humidity room preferred). I tend to alcohol wipe things with 70%-95% alcohol, too.

Thank you! I am stocking for 7 months as of right now. I will definitely pack them very good for the freezer.

Hi beach sunrise,

I’m a simple person so I either just have it in water (it doesn’t taste great but it’s ok), or I mix it in with my other powdered things if I’m taking them - usually psyllium, PHGG and creatine. You do need to mix it well or you get a gloop at the bottom.

Thank you for the info, Rob! I will be sure to mix it well. It just came in the mail today :)
rp brought up a point about active beta glucans to research on the turkey tail about percentages of PSK. Good info to check. The one I am taking now is 34.1% PSK, so I feel better about that.

Thanks for the heads up! We have a stock because the first batch from mushroom science went “missing” on transit and I had to reorder the another batch. Then suddenly the day after I ordered it arrived! Anyway the expiry is in a year so I think there’s sufficient for now :)
