Tea, and other warm beverages while on FOLFOX

Postby WarriorOne » Wed Jul 01, 2020 4:25 pm

I'm starting my 3rd round of FOLFOX today, and I've been having a lot of trouble with room-temperature water. I can drink warm water, but I'd also like to explore some things with flavor, as I think I'll be more successful in hydrating than just relying on plain warm water.

I was looking towards tea, but I've read that some teas (rooibos, green, and white teas) may interfere with the treatment (makes it less effective). Other beverages seem to influence liver enzymes, so that's a concern too since I have a liver metastasis.

What warm beverages do you drink? Are you aware of any potential interference between certain warm beverages and FOLFOX treament? I'd love to hear the communities thoughts on this.

Thank you, and be well!

Hi, haven't heard green tea is bad. I drink it all the time. Other things are peppermint bark tea, room temp fresh squeezed lemonade and warm coffee in addition to filtered water.

Green tea can interfere with several drugs. I don't think it's much of a problem with Folfox but when I switched from Folfox to Folfiri, I was specifically told by the oncology nutritionist not to drink green tea because it does not play well with irinotecan. If you check the "Do Not Take If" section of the green tea page at the About Herbs website, there's a list of other drugs that are problematic with green tea. You may be able to search for other teas and find something you like that's safe.

I don't know how well this will work for you but Ultima makes some flavored electrolyte powders that you can add to water, and then you could warm it. It might taste like a flowery herbal tea. The powders contain no sugar but all of the ones I've tried have a lot of flavor. Having the electrolytes might also help for other issues. My fav is Cherry Pomegranate but Raspberry and Grape were also good. I buy it from my naturopathic oncologist's office but I've also seen it at Sprouts and on Amazon. Here's an Amazon link where you can read more about it:

I drank so much hot black tea during my run with CAPOX that I can no longer stand it. Used to enjoy a variety of flavors, family sent me tons I'd never tried before while I was going through it.

Literally gave away my kettle and all the tea I had left. Really hoping I don't have more OX in my future. Nasty stuff, especially since I didn't have a port yet.

Coffee drinker here too. I would always stop by burger king on way to infusion. Would get an egg cheese breakfast sandwich and coffee. No problems, one I had orange juice and was throwing it up 10 mins later. We all decided I should probably OJ until after I was completely down with chemo treatment.

Back in 2004 when I had my surgery, I had my last meal on a Saturday, prep on Sunday, surgery on Monday. I was not allow to eat or drink anything until after I passed gas. That was not until Thursday morning. Forget food, all I wanted was coffee, coffee, coffee.

I've never been a coffee or tea drinker, but they gave be black (Darjeeling) tea at the hospital and I kept drinking that throughout chemo. I also warmed up big glasses of plain water. I don't think you can drink enough tea to keep properly hydrated. The warm water wasn't as satisfying as cold water for me, but what can you do? I'm about 3-4 months out from my last oxaliplatin treatment and can eat cold watermelon and gulp down cold water again. Thank goodness, because it's summer!

I've had coffee and warm or hot water during chemo. My general feeling is that water is the best for hydration. Water is best for bypassing the ileostomy bag. You will probably need to go to the bathroom during or after chemo to drain the bag and water is better for going through the bladder than coffee. At least that's my experience.
