Remission!?!

Postby boxhill » Thu May 21, 2020 8:09 pm

I had an MRI on Wednesday, and discussed the results with my oncologist today. The previously enlarged lymph nodes continue to be normal, and the tiny liver thing is exactly the same. At this point, he thinks it might just be some random scar. There has been no change at all since April 2019. My onc actually used the "R" word: remission.

The upshot, we will stop Keytruda, and scan every three months. Hope that my arthralgia fades, the rapidly the better, which will help me get exercise and manage my T2 diabetes again, and live a normal life.

I'm a happy camper. And realize how lucky I am.

I had my MRI yesterday: still all clear, 3 months out from stopping Keytruda.

This time the radiologist had more to say about the little liver thing, concluding that because of several factors "this does not appear to represent viable tumor." First time a radiologist has come right out and said it. Yay!!

Meanwhile, the arthralgia hasn't diminished much, if at all. Still grateful but hoping...

Really happy to hear this! So thrilled for your remission!

Regarding your arthralgia, is that a normal side effect of Keytruda? Guessing so.

But for what it’s worth, I had a ton of joint pain come on in about mid-December. It was three months after I stopped chemo, so even though my onc thought it was chemo-driven arthritis, it didn’t seem right to me.

Then I got a very low but positive mark on a screener for rheumatoid arthritis.

I started to research and came across something called paraneoplastic response. This is when your body mounts an outsized immune reaction to an internal threat (like, say, cancer). It can happen months or even years before cancer is picked up on a CT scan. I had a clean scan a month after my symptoms started and didn’t see anything until two months later.

When I had an appt with a rheumatologist, she said if I had presented in this way without a cancer diagnosis, the first thing she would have done is screen me for it.

My CEA is down to 0.7 after my last 8 rounds of chemo. And my pain / swelling is totally gone now. Will get scan results in the next few days, but if they look good I’ll be even more convinced that last December, my body gave me an early warning!

Anyway, given that Keytruda stimulates the immune system in a very similar way, I am sure that there is a very good chance your pain is just due to that. But didn’t want to not raise my experience JUST in case. : )
