MSK friendly lodging in NYC

Postby beach sunrise » Mon May 04, 2020 3:17 pm

Hi all, a new CC patient at center I get chemo was telling me she was recently dx stage 4 CC w/mets to liver. She is allergic to the oxa in folfox so just doing the 5FU right now.. She said they are suggesting chemo for life. I explained oncs are for chemo opinions, surgeons are for surgery opinions. Second opinions can be gold. My question is what hotels are friendly in relation to distance to MSK NYC and isn't outrageous expensive?

There is a Courtyard by Marriott that is literally in the same building practically. We liked to stay at the Maxwell, which is a few blocks walk. Sunday nights usually cost $125 or so. And I bet prices are even lower these days!

Thank you so much, Gina! I hope you are doing OK. I might be joining her on a trip there myself if it turns out I have spread. CEA keeps going up on folfox. Got message a while ago saying onc wants to see me after this round (#6 of 8 ). I really have no idea why sudden appt but thinking he may want to do a scan.

I always stay at the Pod (on 55th). It is walking distance to Dr. Kemeny's on 53rd and you can take a shuttle from the MSK 53rd office to the hospital. Very convenient. It is always one of the lowest priced options. However, it is very very basic. Think dorm room type accommodations. Very clean but very small and very basic. Many rooms share floor bathrooms. I have never had a problem with this as I am there for a night only and just need a place to sleep and watch television. (BrownBagger recmmended this Hotel to me about 7 years ago and I use it whenever I have an overnight appointment at MSK.

It really depends on what time of year you go. The courtyard on 3rd and 53rd is fairly reasonable most the year. Sometimes in the summer it is stupid expensive. The Residence Inn on 48th and Lex is usually a good deal. There is a kitchenette with fullsize fridge and they serve a hot breakfast. Again, depends on the time of year. You can get a discount if you use the link on the MSKCC lodging site. The Helmsley Guest Facility next to NYP is about $273 a night for the cheapest studio. Full kitchen and they do not charge any taxes or fees (they are a nonprofit). They are our go to hotel when it is touristy times in NYC. We spent almost a month in NYC the end of Feb-mid March for a few surgeries, and the Residence Inn ended up being the best bargain for us.

Oh, and there is also the Hope Lodge. That is free but can be hard to get into. If your friend is having trouble affording accommodation, please encourage them to reach out to an MSKCC social worker. I have heard from people in the waiting room how wonderful they are at helping with lodging, sometimes at no cost.

It took me three calls to figure out Hope Lodge is only an options for patients who have treatment at least three times a week. So it’s not a good option for surgery or regular chemo unfortunately.

Thank you so much! I will also pass along this info too if I see her again. I hope you all are doing good and staying safe!
My cancer center still doesn't have proper protection. The nurses are still wearing homemade mask. My stress level is so high when I am there for chemo!
