3b right sided colon cancer questions for Onc

Postby Beckster » Sat Apr 11, 2020 1:53 pm

Hi everyone....I have been a member for over 3 years with stage 2A colon cancer. However, recently I received a phone call from a long time friend who was just diagnosed with right sided colon cancer at the age of 75. They are reaching out to me because I also had right sided colon cancer. Needless to say, they are trying to focus and stay calm, but it is very hard. He has had multiple colonoscopies and twice in the past, he was hospitalized for bleeding after the procedure. 2 1/2 years after his last colonoscopy, he lost about 8 pounds and bloodwork showed that he as anemic and low iron. He had surgery 2 weeks ago at a designated cancer center and received his pathology report.... T4 tumor, 2 out of 24 nodes, clear margins, LVI, Grade 3, normal CEA...so I am thinking 3B. Clear ct scan for metastasis.

They are meeting with the oncologist on Monday, and I know the basic questions for him to ask, but I am asking any of you here to add specific questions with regards to age, treatment, Vitamin C IV or anything thing else that he may benefit by. Thanks...

He needs to know his basic tumor genetics: MSS/MSI, BRAF and KRAS wildtype or mutated.

The big question will probably be advujant chemo or not. (Or immunotherapy if he is MSI.) There's a lot of discussion right now about not taking the risk during the height of the epidemic.

Thanks for the response...I did not know there was discussion about taking chemo during the epidemic. Would not doing chemo pass the golden window be detrimental to an ultimate cure?

I have the impression that the debate is about the risk of lowering one's immune system plus the risk of regular visits to a medical facility (even though from what I've seen at my cancer center it has to be about the safest place there is), which might lead to higher risk of dying from Covid-19 now, vs a possibly higher risk of dying of CRC later.

A tough position.

Every patient and their oncologists have to make their own decisions, I guess. Personally, I'd go for the treatment if it was advisable, and just continue to be very careful, but that's me. (In fact, I am continuing to have Keytruda infusions every 3 weeks.)

If you do some googling on the subject you'll easily find articles discussing it. But do note that the information is constantly changing.

What is this person's over all health? Some times, older people die from other medical issues and not the cancer they may have.

Maybe the oral version of 5-FU.

I wish your friend all the best.
