Post sigmoidectomy pain

Postby Usmccolon » Sun Apr 05, 2020 8:33 pm

February 25th I had my gallbladder removed lapriscopically and part of sigmoid colon removed via robot.

I was in hospital an extra day or 2 because of pain and bowels taking while to wake up.

About 2 weeks after surgery I felt great and wasn't even taking Tylenol. For last couple weeks though I've been getting intermittent lower left and lower right pains. I was having pain as well for at least a week when urinating. The urinating pain was internal and hurt more as bladder was getting more empty and would stop a couple seconds after not peeing anymore.

For most part now though I'm getting lower left and right pain. Different types of pain too. Mostly feels like diverticulitis (usually not to painful when I've had it in past) but other times feels like a bad soreness in lower left pelvic area. Also still getting the intermittent burning type pains around a couple of the incisions or in between incisions. Couple days ago I took some dulcolax because I wasnt going to bathroom as much. OMG that hurt. Even after that though I was still having the pains mentioned above.

Is this normal? I mentioned it to surgeon week and a half ago shortly after it started and he said it was probably still healing. He didn't examine me though because we had to do a telehealth appointment due to covid-19. When should these pains go away and when should I bring it up again to a Dr?

Hell YEAH mention it !
you have a problem and the DOCS need to get you some info and relief !

Could be healing / scarring / adhesions etc. etc .etc.
BUTT if they don't even get involved ... you are still in pain.

You can read my bio here and one thing I have always said :
" sometimes pain is inevitable ... BUTT
suffering from it IS NOT !! "

KEEP pushing until you get an answer that works for YOU.

Maybe .... get a pain specialist involved ?
OR a GIT specialist ... surgeons are not always the best for follow up issues

trust me on this !

Best wishes and keep us in the loop

Don't have results yet but Primary is checking for urinary tract infection which I don't think I have.

Talked with surgeon today. He said the intermittent incision pain is likely just nerves rebuilding and should be fine.

I also told him that yesterday I had some blood streaked in stool which surprisingly is only blood I've had in stool since surgery. Suggested some miralax for a little while to see if things improve. He said sometimes a stricture can happen so if things don't get better then he can look into that.

Another weird but good thing has also happened as result of surgery. So I had my tonsils taken out while I was in military and after surgery I was told I had hypertension. never really fully under control for like 15 years and finally got it good maybe 6 months ago by taken 3 medications a day. During surgery I guess my blood pressure dropped and they had to give me some expensive drugs to keep it up. After surgery while in hospital I wasn't taking my meds because my BP was normal to low normal until last day when I took it. So I just started taking it as normal afterwards. I started getting really dizzy and felt like I would going to fall over so I checked BP and it was 99/61. I've been checking it twice a day now for 4 days and haven't taken any medication and it's been normal. So it's starting to look like my hypertension may have been cured somehow.

I'm sorry you're having pain!*hugs* I had half of my sigmoid and half of my rectum removed in 2014. I had the burning type of pain which my surgeon said was the nerves regrowing. I had a stricture which was stretched during a sigmoidoscopy. I hope your recovery goes well!*hugs*

I saw lab work and WBC was a little elevated and no one seemed concerned.

Surgeon told me that as long as caliber of stool was good and no other issues to wait a few weeks. If problem persisted to let him know and he would order a CT.

The diverticulitis type pain has gone away which is good. Tomorrow I'll probably take miralax since I think I'm constipated.

I'm still getting intermittent pain all over abdomen. Other day halfway between belly button and side it hurt and was tender to touch. No incision there and it lasted like 15 minutes.

Been getting pains near incisions sometimes when walking and notice myself putting arm over pain.

This was going on before surgery but still getting numbness in abdomen as well that comes and goes. I told Drs before about that and they just said "huh" and that was it. Honestly some if the pain could be muscle spasms? I used to get really bad cramps or spasms all over back and torso that hurt really bad. Like stop me in my tracks pain. Felt like ghost reaching into body and squeezing all the muscles. They never really looked into that either other then saying potassium was fine.

But things could be a lot worse, it's only been like 9ish weeks since surgery I think.

Oh and my surgeon said some of my previous wound pain was likely nerves regrowing as well. He said they grow a mm a day roughly.

I was having a vibrating sensation in my abdomen that began about 2 wks ago. It was determined to be muscle spasms, stress related. I have numbness in my abdomen due to surgery so couldn't feel the pain of stress, just the vibrating sensation. Mine is chemo/covid19 stress. I'm going with that for now.

Thanks for sharing your stories here. Maybe I will share my own story here soon enough.

Just wanted to update here. Scheduled for surgery October 1st but not sure if I'll cancel it or not.

I hope my experience isn't a fluke and may help others. Last week I went and got a massage. This person really seemed in tuned and focused on 6 spots. Shoulders, lower back, and glutes.

The day before my bad pain started after surgery I was having trouble walking intermittently because of bad lower back pain above legs. That's when my pains started and we're worse with more activity. That lasted month or two and when I got massage I mentioned before I could walk better and I felt better at least for a few days. I could do everything I could before surgery. Then pain came back at those 6 points and next day pain started coming back.

So if anyone had already had surgery and developes new pains after I would suggest trying a few different massage people to see if it helps.
