Blood in stool after resection

Postby Bilbailee » Wed Mar 25, 2020 11:55 am

Hello. Thanks for letting me join your forum. I had a sigmoid resection 3 weeks ago with robot assistance due to cancerous polyp. I did not have a colostomy. After about a week my stools started to form but i started noticing dark marron blood on paper and sometimes blood in the water that had ran off the stool. I was worried and stopped by the surgeons office but he wasnt in. The lady there called him and he said its normal and not to worry. Its been 3 weeks now and still have noticable blood in stool. Is this normal? Has anyone else here had this experience? Thank you again.

Hi and welcome,

I think I would call the surgeon office and explain your concern. Find out how long is the bleeding suppose to last.

Are you suppose to have any follow up appoints with this surgeon? If yes, maybe bring it up then.

Good luck,

I started having slight amount of blood in stool few weeks after resection too. Went to doctor who said if it persists two more week, contact again and I get referral to rectoscope. Turns out I had polyp that was missed by original colonyscopy that found my cancer tumour. The polyp had some advanced features and it was fortunate to be found in time. I suggest you still harass doctors about your blood.

Thank you for the replies. I really appreciate it. I have a follow up appointment on april 3rd with the surgeon. The oncologist said he recomends xeloda tablet chemo "just in case" because they only retrieved 2 lymphnodes. But that it was up to me and there was really no wrong answer? The 1 cm polyp was diagnosed as invasive well to moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma arising in a tubulovillous adenoma with possible lymphovascular invasion. There was nothing found on any part of the colon and stem and the 2 lymphnodes. My CEA was 1 before surgery and .63 after. I have till end of month to let oncologist know if i will take chemo or not.
