COVID19 and Immunotherapy

Postby plastikos » Sun Mar 15, 2020 8:24 am

Hi again. Have not checked in for a while. Happy to report that I am ok. Just some scans coming up. Little over 5 years from my Stage IV diagnosis and coming up on 3 years NED.

Not sure if this has been discussed. But do you think being on or having been on any form of immunotherapy (i.e. checkpoint inhibitors) has any implication on getting infected by the coronavirus and getting COVID19? We’re read that people with compromised immune systems have it tougher. I know as cancer patients we traditionally fall under that category. But does a ramped up immune system give you a theoretical advantage? This is all in theory.

Hi ,
So great to hear you are doing so well .
That crossed my mind too .
My friend had to go onto steroids as she had a drop in her kidney function . She had a few brain mets pop up a couple of months later . They are under control but they are doubling her immunotherapy every two weeks to get it going .
She is social distancing just now but it’s difficult to achieve with three kids .
Hope your right ,

Excellent question, plastikos. I haven't been able to find anything one way or another, except speculation that the unrestrained immune system might go nuts when challenged by the virus and over-react.

But again...totally speculation.
