He’s an awesome guy - has always approached me with curative intent, and has done two resections on me now (the second was pretty tricky too - deep, nudging the hepatic vein). I believe he does around 150-200 livers + pancreases per year. He’s also a major trauma surgeon which I like (I figure these guys can handle any surprises... surely a gunshot to the liver is about as hard as it gets!)

It’s not MSK, but at least even with flights and hotels you’re probably only looking at 10% of the cost. My in-laws have plenty of space for you too :)

You are too kind, Rob! I actually wrote your surgeon's office back in the summer when you gave me his contact info. I got an answer from his secretary who said that since he was so far away, we might want to visit a surgeon in Edinburgh (I think it was there, I should check). Thanks for reminding me! I honestly wouldn't mind the travel, but it sounded like they thought it was silly for us to come all that way. But it wouldn't hurt to send him Jesper's next scan and see what he says!

Please consider a consult with Dr. Yuman Fong at City of Hope. I've written a lot about him before, you can do a keyword search. Suffice it to say, his bona fides for liver surgery are unmatched.

I've seen patients at MSK get liver resection even in the setting of multiple lung mets. But I feel a little more confident about Dr. Fong in this specific case. Lung mets aren't ideal, but he's also not afraid of them. In the end, it's the liver that needs to be addressed most of all, so he will address that first. Deal with the lungs later. I've seen him do this for many, many patients. Best of luck to you and Jesper.

Amazing!! That is very inspiring. And your liver has been clear since your resection? do you know how many mets you had in your liver?

yes it's still clear...before the chemo I had 5 liver mets and the biggest was 7cm....but I responded well to the chemo and eventually the mets were 2 and the others were only "death scar tissue"...

I just wanted to let you know that I am in touch with Dr. Fong! I emailed him and he wrote me back within minutes. As soon as we get Jesper's next scan I'm sending all documents to him (as well as MSK and a handful of large European hospitals) and we will see what happens! Thanks again for the recommendation!

I am a physician with colorectal cancer in remission. I would recommend Dr. Kemeny or another MSK colorectal cancer specialist for liver mets and Dr. Drewes in Coswig Germany for laser metastectomy if you have more than three or four lung metastases.
I did not have liver metastases but I had seven spots in my lungs which were removed by Dr. Drewes and NED for almost 11 months now. I check this site every few weeks or so.
46 rectal ca. 12/16
LAR 1/17 rectal tumor stage 2b, 0/30 nodes +
Xeloda x 6 mos
CT 6/18 - 4 nodules R lung + 3 new spots in left lower lung
6/18 folfiri + Avastin x 5 cycles
LAPM Germany 10/18 - 10 nodules removed right lung, 4 cancer
11/1/18 R pneumothorax - chest tube placed surgically
11/6/18 L lower lobe subtotal resection
12/18 blood in urine -> rectal ca met on bladder
3/1/19 bladder surgery, no peritoneal spots noted
4/19 MSK self referral
Avastin + xeloda x 6 mos
10/19, 1/20 CTs look good
