Memorial Sloan Kettering Hotel Option Question

Postby Rob in PA » Tue Dec 10, 2019 6:47 am

Hi folks,
I've got a friend recently diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer and she is meeting tomorrow with a Doctor there to go over options with her. They booked a hotel room for around $390 a night and that was supposedly WITH the Sloan discount. That sounds like a lot and I was wondering if you fine folks would know of any cheaper options that they could look at for their next appt.

They are coming in from Western Pennsylvania area.

At UPMC - Hillman in Pittsburgh (where i go) they have an apartment style Family House that is for family members of patients at UPMC and it is only around $40 per night. Does Sloan Kettering have anything like that?

Thanks!

We have had good luck with rooms under $200 at the Maxwell. But lately the hotels have all been crazy expensive, maybe due to the holidays? I did contact MSK to ask about Hope Lodge or similar for my last surgery; that is available for free, but only if you have treatment 3 or more times a week. I did a lot of digging and couldn’t come up with anything else.

POD Hotel rooms are also cheap, and theres one walking distance to MSK. If you are staying longer for treatment, you can always contact MSK social worker to get you free accommodations through the ACS or help you find cheaper options.

I stay at the POD on 53rd St. also. It is really very plain (like a dorm with shared bathrooms) but I almost always get a room for under $200.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn- which was a short walk to MSK.
I don’t remember the cost, as we needed the 2nd opinion and confirmation on what type of cancer I had this time.

Always check hotel program promotions; and use points if possible.
Season may matter- as some people want to be in NYC for Christmastime.
But New York is always too expensive.

Helmsley Medical Tower is about $283 a night, which isn't cheap but it's a real apartment with a kitchen, which means you can save money by eating breakfast, etc. there. They aren't for the general public - just for medical patients going to NY Presbyterian or MSK. The staff is wonderfully supportive.

If their appointment is at the Rockefeller Outpatient Pavilion on 53rd, they can take the Q train and transfer to 6 at 59TH & Lex (if they want to take the subway).

Hope this helps!

The Bentley, cheapest to book online. The residence in on East 48th and Lexington is sometimes cheap. As others have mentioned the pod hotels. I would recommend a queen bedroom here though then you have your own bathroom and a little bigger room. I book hotels through my united airlines app and it seems to have good deals most of the time. Plus i get extra airline miles

We usually bounce between the Courtyard on 3rd at 53rd or the Helmsely Medical tower. the Helmsely is 273 a night for the cheapest room but there are no taxes or fees since it is a non profit. You just pay the 273. The studio has a kitchen as well, so nice for cooking or even buying stuff you can easily reheat. We like that option because the scans and labs can be done the day before at the hospital and then you can catch the shuttle from the main hospital to 53rd for your appointments the next day. Way easier than cabs or subway and free!
