After HAI

Postby Mohrfamily » Sun Dec 08, 2019 4:04 pm

So questions abound. I try not to stress over too much, after all Christmas is around the corner and my wonderful husband had the greatest surgery to get him on track for a long life with his nagging wife :)

He has been losing a lot of weight, his appetite after surgery hasn't been at 100% but 4 weeks after surgery he is eating pretty well considering. He just took a hot bath, low level water to not submerge those incisions to soothe an achy butt/ back. When he got up he says he felt the pump shift/ move snd it did feel a little tight by the cut for the pump in comparison to his other side. Is this normal? We head down to the doctor tomorrow for a check up and chemo flush for saline.

I guess any little tid buts of random info on these pumps would help ease his snd my mind. I just don't want him to worry.

Colonoscopy/endoscopy/port place 5/29

I am variably aware of the pump. Like sometimes I forget it’s there, and other times it is painfully present. When I walk after I eat, I get a cramp - it’s almost like it rubs the muscle there the wrong way. And I think based on Google, that’s what’s actually happening. When I know I’m going to be active, I wear tight yoga pants / leggings that have a high waist so it’s covered and tight to my body.

Sometimes it feels like it’s going to flip in my body. I’m so thin, I think that’s physically impossible, but it FEELS that way when I catch it on my pants waistband or something.

I’ve had it for 8 months now so there are days when it seems like I should be more used to it by now! But for all the weirdness, it stays where it is supposed to stay and does what it is supposed to do, so I can’t complain!

I would definitely mention it to the doctor/surgeon as there has been some cases if the pump coming detached and actually flipping. Its rare but it happens. At MSK there are paitents that actually have the pump installed high up under the left breast on the rib cage. They seem to do that with people that are on the heavy side to prevent the flipping from happening. If you want to learn more about the HAI pumps there are a couple groups on Facebook you can join. One of them is the HAI pump people which is in colontown. You have to go to colontown.com and register first and then they will invite you through Facebook. The other good group on Facebook for the pump is called liver mets from crc. That group has about 40 of us with the pump. The other one in colontown has even more. Good luck.

Sending good thoughts that it's something minor!

I'm with Gina - wearing any kind of supportive garment (running tights, etc.) helps it feel more secure. I'm thin too but mine often felt like it could move if I bent the wrong way. Well worth it to be cancer-free though! :D

It sounds worse than how it looks. We will probably find out the results of them testing it Monday. He seems to be doing better although I attribute that to actually taking his antibiotic at home this time. He thinks this happened because he pushed himself to hard physically to get better quicker from surgery. Example:

BEFORE surgery he would walk on the treadmill (during crappy weather) at 1-2 mph
AFTER surgery he pushed himself up to 4-5 mph

Whoa! That's a big change! Tell him he needs to go sloooow. His body has been through a lot and it needs time to heal.

It's good he is so motivated, but take it easy. And tell him to take those antibiotics until they are all gone, not to stop if he starts feeling better!

Glad I'm not the only one! Luckily the fluid came back as.... fluid. No bacteria just regular old fluid so good news. They're still having trouble finding the owning to the pump for access because he's still tender and still a little swollen I can't wait for that to be fully healed and maybe that will go smoother

Did any of you with the pump ever experience some liver pain while getting your pump chemo? DH has been struggling a little with that and a 2 week long stint of morning sickness while the chemo works through his liver. He refuses to take anything and has tried a bunch of other tricks that don't seem to work. Advice?
