I live in a state in Australia called New South Wales and there was about 150 fires around the state and Sydney (where I live) was covered in smoke for the best part of two weeks so I gave up my running and used my home gym to exercise.
Fires are a problem on the west coast of the US too. I tried wearing an N-95 face mask during my runs but felt like I was suffocating. So far my solution has been to go up higher in the mountains since the fires are usually in the lower areas or near the coast. Above 6,000 feet there's no smoke, but on the other hand I'm in a very remote area so I have to be careful.
Do you use a treadmill or an elliptical at home? Do you wear different trainers (sneakers) than for an outside run?
