My mother had a very bad diet. Lots of greasy, fast food. Lots of cheese. She also drank heavily. She had breast cancer in her forties, and was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer at 56. It progressed to Stage IV, and she passed away after a near 10 year battle. She had so many health problems, but finally cancer with liver mets was what put her in hospice. That was 7 years ago.

I always felt alcohol was her biggest enemy.

I found a thread about aspirin which you contributed to. It was four or five years ago, and most, if not all of the people who claimed to take aspirin regularly are still around and NED for years.

My theory is there are a lot of things you can do that improve your chances by some percentage, and all those percentages add up.

Yeah absolutely, we all know that conventional treatment alone isn’t enough, we need to be more discipline to improve our odds. That being said, my husband has been super healthy the past 10-15 years, on most days, he’s vegetarian but enjoys the occasional burger / steak with wine maybe once in 2 weeks. He loves his sweets but rarely has them. He exercises 3-5 times a week (rain, snow or shine).

I feel awful to deprive him from milk, cheese, sugar and red meat, on top of going through chemo. He lost 15kgs and now, the sight of all his favourite foods like salads or juices makes him wanna puke.

Still trying to find a balance...

Hi Siti,

Good to hear from you. My situation is similar. Husband had high cholesterol about 10 years ago. Since he had to eat more healthy, I did too. Now with cancer he has to be even more careful. We used to drink an occasional glass of wine. And we went back to eating a bit too much ice cream. Not anymore. We’ve even started making our own soup :D. Much lower in sodium and tastes much better than store bought

His overall health had been poor for a long time, and we never understood why. Very low energy, couldn’t stay awake past 8pm. I swear he sometimes has more energy than I do. We go for walks. Today he helped me put up a ladder. It’s just so strange how much better he’s been feeling since he started treatment.

I think he’s one of the lucky ones since his worse day on chemo is better than his best day had been for the previous year. I swear the supplements have helped. Also, when they gave him good news about his CEA and how the liver tumors shrunk so much after only about a month, it gave him a nice morale boost and made him believe for the first time he has a chance. That positive attitude seems to play a big role in his recovery.

It’s a different subject but he says he had an out of body experience maybe three years ago, and it changed his whole outlook on life. So, he isn’t afraid of dying. He doesn’t want to die, but isn’t afraid because he is sure that it doesn’t end there.

I tend to think he won’t know that for sure for a long time.

I’m looking forward to hearing good news about your husband! Take care.
