Any riders out there?

Postby Rock_Robster » Wed Sep 25, 2019 11:12 pm

Hi all, so before I was diagnosed I used to ride a motorbike - a sportbike to be precise. When I moved countries for treatment I sold the bike, and haven’t been game to repurchase something yet.

Between fatigue, neuropathy, an ostomy, and god knows what else, I keep talking myself out of getting back into riding. Is anyone out there doing this during treatment? Did you make any adjustments to accommodate things? I’m wondering if maybe I should pick up a cafe racer or something else a bit less physically taxing than a full tuck. I’m not suggesting riding myself to chemo or anything; just on the good days that I feel up to it.

Appreciate any thoughts or experiences.

Cheers,
Rob

I own only a 150cc motorbike and a powerful electric kick scooter. I rode them everyday in between the 6 cycles of Xelox during my treatment, but only the days i feel my body is up to it. Riding my scooters, especially along the coast, had given me a stoke feeling that greatly helped me when anxiety and fear creeps in. it's my escape from anything related to cancer. 17 months post diagnosis/treatments, i still enjoy riding them. I rode them the most every time i'm waiting for scan results :D :D . Ride Safe!

Thanks Kaloy that’s really encouraging! This is exactly what I’m looking for - a bit of an escape and something to take my mind off things for a while. Appreciate the insight.

Safe riding 8)

Hi,

Yes another rider here. I also ride sportbikes. My two street bikes are a 2009 Ducati 848 and a 2004 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R. I don't remember how much riding/if any I did during treatment. But I do know I did go out to an annual track school event I had been doing for years prior to my diagnosis. At first I wasn't planning on going but decided to go. I didn't have any issues that pop in my head with my time on the track. I don't remember if I was on their Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6Rs or their BMW S1000RRs. I did 2 full days of the track school which was about 7 sessions per day with about 20 minutes of track time per session.

Jesper rides a sportbike too! Shortly after his diagnosis in the spring, he sold his old one (also a sportbike) and bought a new (used) one. It definitely cheers him up! Between his Vectibix rash and other side effects, he hasn't been out on it too often, but it happens once in a while. It makes him happy so I'm glad he has it. I don't remember what type of bike it is, but I know it is fast! :D

Thanks zx10guy - appreciate it! An S1000RR is definitely more aggressive than anything I was considering (I liked Mt CBR500R), and I might hold off on track days for now but sounds like the occasional coast road ride might be in order 8)

That’s great Alex! Glad he’s been able to keep it up - i reckon it’s super important to have things to do other than treatment. I hope Denmark has some nice riding spots - I didn’t ride much in the Netherlands (flat, straight and wet!) but I think the Aussie weather and twisties might be in order...

Yeah I think there would be some great roads in Victoria! Jesper's bike is a Suzuki GSXR 1000. He definitely enjoys having it and doing something that makes him happy!

Thanks all for the support - I bought a CBR500R today! Riding position is good and no issues at all with the stoma.

Cheers

Hey hey. Though my surgeon looked at me sternly and told me to sell the bike after all his excellent LAR work and my excellent recovery four years ago, I commute on a new Honda Metropolitan 49cc ever since my Ruckus started becoming increasingly troublesome. I didn't ride the first year post-surgery, but got back into it after a while. As a friend's brother who rides once observed, sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas to get to feeling yourself again.

Thanks CatHair, sounds great! Agree a full tank is the best therapy sometimes...

I hadn’t considered the LAR; I’ll mention it to the surgeon next week but hopefully he doesn’t have any issue with it. It was fairly high up and test riding was comfortable.
