Upcoming Surgery

I think there is a small chance I could have a temporary ileostomy. Originally I was old 10-15% chance. My surgeon did a flexible sigmoidoscopy on Friday to get a better feel of my tumor location. He told my husband I was an excellent candidate for LAR. I am okay either way. Just praying for an uncomplicated procedure. Just started my ‘cleanse’. My date with the surgical team is at 10AM tomorrow.

I was released from the hospital yesterday with a foley catheter. My bladder was struggling to void all the urine it was producing.

The lowdown on surgery 9/23/2019:

LAR completed of the original 3cm tumor. Did not perform temporary ileostomy.

Splenules resulting from a childhood splenectomy in 1976 had regenerated and were twisting around my small intestines. Resulted in a resection of small intestines.

Appendix was removed.

Left ovary removed.

I have a question. Did anyone have leakage from drain site after having the drain removed? Trying not to over react but it’s a bit concerning.

I had leakage for a few weeks - I just dressed it regularly. The amount decreased with time.

I continue to have unanticipated challenges with my bladder. I had my catheter removed last Wednesday. Since then, I am voiding but it takes effort to get a stream started and to fully void. The urologist I saw prescribed Flomax. He flippantly stated it was most often given to males with prostate issues, did not specify how it could help my situation...I did not begin taking it but now I am questioning my decision. Did any of you struggle with bladder issues / primarily voiding post surgery? Experience with Flomax? Suggestions?

I assume that you already spoke to your surgeon and your
Surgeon referred you to urology.

Yes, regretfully I was not highly impressed with the urologist. I felt my concerns were a bit dismissed. I will seek an additional referral if my bladder situation doesn’t improve. My colorectal surgeon is wonderful and is supporting me in every way possible post op. My surgery ended up being much more extensive than ‘just’ the planned LAR. It has only been two weeks, so still much recovery time ahead. I must be patient.

I also had an LAR 9 months ago and had (and somewhat still have) problems urinating. Not particularly bad but I seem to be able to void the "top half" of my bladder. E.g., if I'm full then I can void some easily but have to push/tense a lot to get much of the rest out. I'm also on Flomax prescribed by my urologist. Seems easier if I'm standing (e.g., at urinal or in the shower).

If only 2 weeks out AND if you can reliably go, then wait and see if oncodoc and urologist OK with that. You do NOT want to get to where you can't go at all, that's a trip to the ER I am told.
