The Budwig diet

Anyone tried it? You know, you blend cottage cheese together with flaxseed oil? Opinions, experiences, results?

I tried it when I was first diagnosed, and I just couldn't get it down. I thought it was so disgusting. Blending it together with an overripe banana was the only way to make it tolerable, and I didn't usually have overripe bananas.

But today, I thought maybe I'd given up too soon. If this diet really does help, then I need to have a stronger constitution and just get this stuff down my throat.

Hi TinaFish,

MSK have a very thorough summary of it on their website; link below. For me it’s in with most of the “unproven diets” - as in, if you can do it, stay healthy, makes you happy, and don’t stop other treatment - it’s probably not going to hurt. However if I’m gonna eat something that’s not been proven to cure cancer, it’s gonna be a donut... :D

Cheers

Yeah, I'm sure that MSK couldn't say that the diet worked unless there had been studies that they could reference. And of course the propaganda states that no one wants to orchestrate a study because there's no money for anybody in the results.

Aaaand of course we really wouldn't know how viable the diet was unless someone eschewed all other treatment and ONLY did the diet. And I'm sure it would be difficult to find a person like that. I just wonder if there's anyone on here who really thinks that it helped them. If so, maybe they have some tips on how to swallow it.

For me, it would have been easier to split the daily amount into four smaller meals. However, my blender wouldn't blend anything unless it had enough in it, and you're supposed to eat this stuff immediately after you mix it up. So I ended up having to go with two meals per day. I just saw the flaxseed oil in my kitchen cabinet today, and I thought that I can't even bear to use it as a salad dressing, or a cooking oil, or ANYTHING. That flavor is just permanently embedded in my memory. I reached to grab it and throw it in the trash, and then that little voice popped into my head, "What if this stuff can actually help you? Why would you throw it away?" So, here I am, asking about it.

I tried it for some. Don't remember why I stopped though.
I actually liked taste of it , nice creamy feel.
Add a bit of black salt and cucumbers chunks. See if it helps.

Thank you for giving me more reason not to eat it ;)

One of my favorite dishes is German "guerkensalad." Thinly-sliced cucumbers, vinegar, salt, some sour cream, and some black pepper. Mix it all together, and it's amazing.

I shudder when I think about turning the Budwig stuff into something savory instead of sweet.

I'm surprised you stopped eating it if you liked the taste of it. Did you feel like it wasn't helping you?

And I see that you started taking aspirin too! I've been taking one baby aspirin each day. Do you feel like it helped you get to NED?

Hi
I don't remember exact reason but I think I was hospitalized for blockage and never restarted taking taking cheese and flaxseed oil.
I am taking 150 mg aspirin daily as I am Lynch positive. Aspirin is for preventing ( hopefully) future reoccurrence.

I used to follow the Budwig diet for a while. I had the Budwig muesli for breakfast, but didnt do this rest of the diet... which actually lays out exactly what you eat every day and when (starting with sauerkraut juice before the muesli and including a glass of champagne mid morning!)

Some days I liked it, and some days I struggled to get it down. Budwig had a strict order for mixing the museli, but I did it my own way. I ground flax seeds and nuts together (I worried about bowel blockages and it made it taste nicer),and stirred it into the quark and oil mix. I then added cinnamon and honey and a few spoonfuls of stewed fruit and mixed it all together.

I definitely felt better when having this for breakfast. More energy and also less joint pain and stiffness. It's a good breakfast on many levels from a general healthy living perspective. Emotionally I think it was important to me too, it felt like I was doing something positive for my health (and balanced out the sweet food and junk food I have failed to cut out my diet). I would probably go back to eating it if I have a recurrence, but ended up stopping because it was too time consuming to make and eat each morning. But for me it is only a cancer treatment in so far as I believe that eating the right foods, getting enough sleep and exercising helps your body fight cancer.
