Liver has been chopped!!

Postby AmyG » Thu Aug 29, 2019 9:25 am

Had my surgery yesterday. 3cm tumor removed, looked to have good margins. I lost about 25% of my liver.

I feel really good. Going for a walk later. Finally not npo and I just ordered breakfast! Yay!!

They said expect a 4-7 day stay. Looking to go home in 4. I'm actually using the little breathing thing they give you. I'm a good sucker.

I was so anxious about this stupid surgery. It was all for nothing, it wasn't bad at all.

This post brought to you by all the lovely drugs they keep giving me.

I'm so glad it went well!

Be forewarned that you may still be feeling good today because the anesthesia is still in your system. I had a big shock when I felt way worse on the second day out.

It took me about 4 weeks to get back to 80-90% of my normal energy and appetite, and I think I probably only had about 15% of my liver removed. So be gentle with yourself and mentally prepare for the fact that this will take some time. (I did not take my own advice this past surgery! I thought it would be the same as my pump placement / colon resection and in fact the liver recovery took about twice as long for me.)

Walking is great if you can do it. Don't be brave and try to go off pain killers too early - managing your pain will make it easier for you to stay active, and that level of activity is going to be a critical driver of how quickly you recover.

Good luck!!

Scrambled eggs, bacon, a biscuit with sausage gravy and cranberry juice. It was delicious.

Gina thanks for your insight, I'll totally keep it in mind. Moving in bed to get to my breakfast was....interesting. I am more sore than I realized!

If you had a real appetite the day after surgery, you are already way ahead of where I was! It took me weeks to feel like eating again. Or pot mints, LOL!

I was starving. On Tuesday night, we gave cancer its last meal. Filet mignon, baked potato, ceasar salad and a lovely bottle of wine.

It was incredibly delicious.

Well kids, I can't empty my bladder.

I might end up getting a Foley back. Not thrilled with that,, but I did take a walk down the hall! Really tired, but feel fabulous.

Now I need to figure out what I'm getting for dinner....

Sounds like a valve is still asleep. I think that I had the catheter for three days before they took it out. I hated that thing because of the pressure buildup if someone didn't empty it regularly.

You get to eat?????

Glad things are going well.
