Starting Capox tomorrow

Hi everyone,

My hubby is starting mop up Capox tomorrow and I would like some advice or just hear from someone who had the same type of chemo.

Is it very different from Folfox? What side effects did you have ?

He is a very active guy and recovered pretty well/fast from his APR surgery. He is finally feeling really good and able to work out and do more physical stuff. Were you able to stay active during chemo or it was too much ?

He is having 6 cycles, which cycle did you start getting more side effects?

Side effects:

Sensitivity to cold, all over the body. Fortunately it's summer now.
Tingling/neuropothy in the toes
Nausea a few days after infusion - they give you anti-nausea drugs at infusion time but the wear off after a few days
Arthritis in the fingers
Discoloration of skin
Fatigue
Pain when biting on food for the first time
Diarrhea around infusions
Cramps due to loss of electrolytes
Fell down the stairs two times at night because of the neuropathy and not being able to feel the edge of the stair.

I found the cold sensitivity unfun but bearable. The oxy portion was manageable but the thing that kicked my ass was nausea. Taking the capecetabine every day got more and more difficult as the two weeks went on. I felt worse on my week off. I think my case was extreme but I would do everything possible to counter the nausea. Marijuana or CBD would have helped a lot, I think, but those weren't really available to me at the time. I recommend them! Also get the best anti-nausea meds from his oncologist. He should do his best to stay hydrated.. It helps everything.
I think many people are able to stay active on this chemo regimen and I hope your husband will also.

Dude, you should read my "Diarrhea and bloating and gas" thread. I just had my 3rd round of chemo. I'm on Capeox. I didn't have any nausea until the 5th and 6th days after my 3rd round of chemo. I was surprised that the nausea didn't come on until the 3rd round. It wasn't too bad, though.

I took three prescription anti-nausea pills at once yesterday evening, after I was fed up with being nauseous all day long and angry that the "suggested" dose of one pill hadn't done anything for me earlier yesterday. The three pills worked great, and I haven't been nauseous since. So today was pretty good. I had my oxaliplatin exactly one week ago and I've been taking the Capecitabine pills since then, although with my diarrhea/cramping/gas side effects, my oncologist told me to take a couple days off from the Capecitabine.

And you know what really helped me feel great last night after straining in vain to poop all day long, and with sore rectal muscles and just a feeling of shittiness? I took a Norco. I've never been a pill popper, much less an opiate pill popper, but I gave myself permission. The Norco made me feel perrrrrrfect

On activity - it is challenging if you're doing everything else normally too because of the fatigue and the time dealing with the temp ileostomy (I'm assuming that your husband has one of these - if he doesn't, then things are simpler).

I did run and walk a lot during chemo. In the last month of chemo I was doing 100 miles per week. That was overkill but I was in a steps contest.

My husband started CAPOX + Avastin 3 days ago and is doing well. He runs / goes to the gym every morning and evening walks in the park. So far his main side effects are sensitive to the cold (throat and touch) and tooth ache when chewing for the first time.
