Radiation relief?

Postby SilverWedding » Mon Jul 22, 2019 11:04 pm

Chemorad Day 20 of 28 - My DH is up every hour or more all night with what he calls pain, discomfort, feeling like he has to go, sometimes he does go which is like broken glass coming out. He takes very warm sitz baths. I was looking into an Amazon link I found on a portable bidet (funny thing - I almost bought it and then I read it’s made with toxins in the plastic and could cause cancer - unreal).

Any suggestions beyond a toxin-laden portable bidet and Desitin?

Thank you.

Ooooh I know that feeling and it sucks. I used a bidet attachment for the toilet, and also MooGoo moisturising cream. It sounds like he might be a bit past that though - there are some other great ideas in the “Surviving radiation for rental cancer” megathread. Good luck to you both!

I think that the thing that helped me the most was fasting. Fasting is pretty unpleasant but less in - less out.

I found lotion containing aloe helpful when undergoing chemo/rad. Cleared it with my team of physicians etc. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3728063/

It sucked for a while, butt it does get better.

Best Wishes,

There are rectal pain creams with lidocaine. Believe I found one at CVS in California. I asked my radiation oncologist for a prescription strength pain killer for the last two weeks and used it for about two weeks after radiation ended. Some describe this as broken glass, others as razor blades, others as hot volcano lava. (Some folks aren't bothered much at all!) Anyway, the pain killer did help. He can try Ensure so he's at least getting some nutrition. There's a newer variety which has a much better flavor. Good luck - this part is not much fun!

Thank you! He got the Lidocaine - and yes, he’s said broken glass and razor blades. Today he said either he’s just getting more used to it or it was a bit better. Taking hot baths 2-3 times a day seems to help. Thank you!

On a lighter note, this also made me laugh - which means a lot. I’m going with the short-term rental I hope!

On a serious note, I have appreciated all the info you and others like NHMike and CRGuy have shared.

Thanks so much. Regarding the MooGoo, is it Skin Milk Udder Cream (gray band on top), or the Irritable Skin Balm (yellow band on top), or Soothing MSM Cream (pinkish band on top), or other? The amazon link for the Skin Milk Udder Cream has a description that talks about use for radiation patients, so I’m thinking that’s the one though! Any thoughts? Thank you.

No worries! I just used the Skin Milk Udder Cream as one of the things they market it for is radiation treatment, however the salesperson said if I needed something stronger than this then they also recommend the Eczema & Psoriasis version. Hope this helps.
