daily enema HELP

Postby tater » Mon Jul 08, 2019 11:48 pm

I'm needing suggestions!! I have a coloanal anastomosis with clustering and urgency. (reversal July 2018) I have been doing a daily enema for about 6 months now and I'm getting discouraged. I'm open to any suggestions.
Morning Ritual:
walk for an hour
3 cups warm tap water enema laying on left side retain for about 10 min. (I've tried doing 4-5cups water, but I can't hold it and it goes very bad spilling out OR if I can hold 4cups there is urgency right after with no retaining time)
Mostly all water comes out with not much stool
I eat an apple with pb and a kind bar while sitting on the toilet. Try to get my colon moving along.
After sitting for about 30 min I get off and stay close because I will be running to the toilet about 4 more times at least within the next hour and a half. So from start to finish its 2hrs and then I take 2 immodium and then I dare leave the house 30 min. later.
So my frustration is that I read these posts and everyone is in the bathroom 30-45 min a day and I'm double that with emergency runs. Not to mention that occasionally my enema hasn't cleaned me out for the day and more time is spent running to the toilet.
Anyone have some "crappy" suggestions??

For what it's worth I'll give u my routine,,,
I've 3 small kids so have no time for enemas in the morning,
I'm only 3 months after reversal and also had a coloanal anastomosis,,,,

After an overnight fast( 12/14 hours)
I take 10g sodium bicarbonate in about 30 MLS warm water on empty stomach (less the better, it's discussing)
I drink back about a lt of miwadi after....
Black Coffee chaser helps even more
Then I carry on getting the kids out to school and usually about 40 min later boom!!!!!!

Large bowel emptied :D
On I go with my merry day
Hope this helps

I’m doing my u.s conversions here and
10g is about 1 1/2teaspoons and
30 milliliters is 2Tablespoons
Is this suppose to be like a paste?
And I’m wondering about the midwadi since we don’t have that drink here. Is it just a carbonated drink or what am I looking for as a replacement?

10g is about a heaped teaspoon , and the warm water is up to urself, ( how much u can tolerate) I make it about Enough to just drink it in 1go
Miwadi is similar to Kool aid,
Just a non carbonated drink to kill the taste,,, ul b very thristy,, so drink plenty all day
Good luck ,

I wish I had some suggestions. My routine is somewhat like yours. I get up and walk for an hour, do some resistance training. I then go up to the bathroom, and do my enema. I put on music, light a candle, put a thick yoga mat down with a towel on it. I use 4 cups of water and lie on my left side with top leg bent. It only takes a couple minutes for the water to flow, then I lay there for ten minutes. I never used to be able to hold the water, but with practice have gotten better. I generally get alot of stool but there are those occasional days when there is not as much. I have learned that staying hydrated does make a difference. If I get too dehydrated it is harder as I think the stool becomes harder. I do know many that do enemas have found taking Imodium can make it harder as well. I do take 1 or 2 lomotil everyday but I am trying not to so much. I don't think I need it, but take for peace of mind. Usually I empty in 30-45 minutes, but I stick around the house for awhile, as I have had the rare instance where I will have leakage later. I used to use 8 cups of water, but have reduced it over the last year. Everyone is different as I think it depends on your transit time and how much colon you have left. I know I do have to tell myself every morning to relax and take deep breaths. There is a facebook page for people with low anterior resection syndrome. Many members use enemas and there is alot of helpful people that can give advice. Some use retention nozzles that allow you to administer the water without the problem of water coming out as it goes in. They even administer the enema while sitting on the toilet. I don't know if you are on facebook, but it may be worth joining as the advice is so helpful. It is a private page and nobody but members can see it. I wish I had more to offer in terms of solutions

My dad use Dulcolax Medicated Laxative Suppositories. It is less work and messy than enema.

When my GI recommended enemas, his other option was miralax daily. The goal was to empty at one sitting. I chose enemas as I had control of when I was in the bathroom. He did say as you take miralax everyday your body will adjust and you will know how long it will be before it begins working. I never tried it, but he said it was safe to use miralax everyday or do enemas with tap water. Suppositories were also suggested. I tried them a couple times and didn't get the results I wanted, but if I continued maybe, i dont know. Whatever works to eliminate all the bathroom visits is my feeling, so long as you are not harming yourself.

the past four days she has changed it up some and it has been working as far as it is down to an hour in the bathroom. She wakes up and has a glass of celery juice and than goes and walks with the girls for an hour. After her walk she does the enema. After about an hour she feels done and takes 1-2 imodium than waits thirty minutes to eat.

An hour is not an unusually long time. I am usually 30-45 minutes, but have had one hour sessions. I hope things continue to improve for her.

I know she wants it to all happen under an hour but I honestly think consistency would be better even if it s the two hours.
