Knicked ureter

Postby bbaldwin1234 » Sun Jun 16, 2019 5:26 pm

Has anyone else had their ureter knicked during colon surgery? I had surgery May 7 to remove tumor from sigmoid and surgeon knicked my ureter (tube from kidney to bladder). I’ve since needed a Foley catheter and a naphrostomy bag. Which was surgically placed. I need another surgery to repair yesterday in a couple of weeks.

It can happen. They often have a urologist place a stent in both ureters before surgery to make them more visible and avoid injury during surgery. I think it’s a relatively common occurrence.

I have a tumor pressing on one ureter and inflation messing with the other one. Trying to avoid the nephrostomy tube for now. At least yours can hopefully be repaired surgically. No one will go in to fix mine.

That is rather unfortunate. I do hope the surgeon who operated on you does not have a history of knicking ureters. Talk to your lawyer.

And at the very least I hope he’s not charging you for the repair surgery...

Probably charging the insurance not the patient.

Personally I don’t really believe in lawsuits for medical errors that aren’t grossly negligent or with malicious intent. Lawsuits raise the costs for everyone and makes surgeons and doctors too cautious. We need them to take risks that may benefit the patient (risk/reward tradeoff) Risks are inherent in surgery. I’ve had serious life altering/shortening complications from surgery and my mCRC was miss diagnosed and treated as TB for 6 months. Sure I could sue. But that’s not what I want to do with my remaining time, and frankly I don’t think it’s the right thing to do. My 2 cents...

My ureter was nicked as well as an artery to my left leg. (My tumor was the size of a baseball the dr said - stage 3B)
Not sure on the artery but I understand nicking the ureter especially in women is common. My surgeon called ina urologist who placed a stent in for about 6 weeks til it healed. No issues after that and thankfully the leg was fine.
Best of luck to you

I had a similar experience but mine was fixed during surgery. It happens. If you notice later that you've lost the sensation to urinate or to empty completely, feel free to PM me and I'll send you a couple of really simple things you can do to fix it.

When my wife had her major surgery that removed her tumors, colon, nodes, etc the first thing they did was place a stent in the ureter. The RC surgeon said that they can get nicked in these types of surgeries especially if the tissue has been radiated. The stent was placed to give the ureter some structure and to let the surgeon know that he was near it.
