Tightness in hips-radiation?

Postby Lmanners31 » Wed Jun 05, 2019 8:53 am

I had 6 weeks of radiation in Nov-Dec of 2018. Had surgery in Feb. Ever sense I’ve had had pretty serious tightness in my glute and hip muscles. Super painful. I’m a frequent exerciser and take time to stretch twice a day. I’m also doing acupuncture, massage and chiropractor. Nothing is improving. Is this from pelvic radiation? Any thoughts on getting some improvement?

Hi,

I had short course radiation and also had hip issues. I often had shooting pain at random times when I would move about. It eventually went away but took over a year. I do know working out and stretching helped it get better.

I had 6 week radiation before surgery and also have a long history of lower back
hip and gluteal tightness.
I exercised a lot and also tried chiropractic, acupuncture, massage and true physiotherapy/rehab.
Everything helped a bit, but nothing did it all.
I also tried muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory medications which also helped some.
I also took statins which makes large muscle group pain /stiffness worse.

I would say massage, stretching and exercise would be the way to continue for muscle issues.

Any chance there may be arthritic problems as well ?
That could be another thing to consider following up on.

I’ve had terrible hip / low back pain. I’m about 2 1/2 months post LAR, no ileo. I had about 6 weeks of radiation around Christmas time.

I do have a history of back problems. A L5-S1 disc herniation and my most recent MRI noted degenerative disc disease at L4-L5.

I’ve tried everything. Most pills do nothing. Stretching doesn’t seem to help much either. The McKenzie back stretch seems to make it worse. I can’t walk more than a few dozen yards without limping.

I’ve been going to a chiropractor/ acupuncturist for about a month now. It’s helping a little bit, I think, but it’s hard to be sure.

I have an MRI on my lumbar coming up. Hoping that it reveals the problem and of course that it’s not cancer.

Hey everyone - I posted a topic about this a while back and had the same issue. So I will share my experience a little here hopefully it can help however it may.

After completing 28 sessions of chemoradiation, like you guys my hip area started to ache and feels very tight (but not painful, I also had slight backache. I wasn't able to do the usual stretches that I could. My radiation onocologist ruled out bone cancer first and foremost but he was nonchalant about the aching I was experiencing in my hip ! :(

I engaged a trainer for some other reasons (to keep fit for surgery) and the trainer advised me some hip exercises when I raised the issue up - the leg extensions machine especially helps. She also recommended the footballer one-leg hip rotation exercises but in the water/pool for both sides of the hip.

It wasn't only very much later that my chemo onocologist told me that the bone marrow in our back is responsible for white blood cell hence when the body is under "attack" either by radiation or chemo, some of us can feel back pain. He didn't specifically mentioned hip pain /ache but I really believed that the back pain due to the bone marrow led to my hip ache.

After 2 months out from chemoradiation, it went away but then I was back on chemo and after 1.5 moths, the same hip ache is starting again. So i truly think that the low white blood cell we are experiencing could be the reason.

MRI came back. Disc pushing on nerve, nothing suspicious.

Relieved in a sense but probably looking at another surgery before I can go back to work.
