CEA and Kidney function

Postby tater » Tue Jun 04, 2019 4:50 pm

Yeah. Just to bring you up to speed quickly. My wife started hyperbolic treatments about 90 days ago to help heal a fistula and issues from radiation. At that time her right side started to hurt they did her labs and CT and her CEA went from 1.3 to 1.8 and showed scaring around the ureter on the right side where they took out nodes. She since has finished treatments and we received the results of an other CT and Labs. This time the CEA has raised to 2.5 and and the CT says that their is pressure in the kidney with additional thickening of the ureter and growth/mass in that area by the bladder. Now we do know that she likes to over heal and this could just be granulation again but we are concerned. My question is, Is their any correlation with kidney function and CEA? Sorry I'm freaking out right now and I know that I shouldn't because the CEA is still normal but it has been trending up and the past two times it has gone up 38% each time.

Elevated CEA readings are found in chronic kidney disease, which is benign. So the rise in your wife's CEA could definitely be related to her kidney issues and not to cancer. And you're right, her CEA is still in the normal range, so I wouldn't worry quite yet.

The tricky thing about CEA is that it's elevated in some non-malignant conditions so once in a great while it throws everyone with cancer for a loop. Hope (and pray) this is one of those times!

I know I just worry its in my genes. I just worry that the thickening on the ureter and bladder could be a new MET. I would like to think this is unlikely but still possible. The onc. did say this time that the kidney function was worse and has sent us to a specialist. I guess I need to calm down and realize that no new issues were picked up on the scan.
