Prep suggestions?

Postby helen098 » Mon Jun 03, 2019 9:29 am

It has been three years since my last colonoscopy
I have a new doc at NYU
My other colon doc the best doc on the world
Retired

I have done the pills a few times
But last time I almost threw up
And I think it’s time for a different prep

What is the new best prep?

I just had a colonoscopy last week (blessedly normal!) and used Pico Salax. I found it to be as effective (perhaps better) as the BiPeg Lyte I used last year. I will be using Pico Salax going forward. You only drink 2 sachets of the solution in 150 mls of water (with Bi-peg Lyte I had to drink 2 litres of awful tasting stuff). The oweness is on you with Pico to drink lots of clear fluids, including a lot of electrolyte based drinks like Gatorade, but at least you can choose what you are drinking.

Good luck to you!

I always do the miralax prep. It’s the least horrible imo. You have to drink a half gallon of Gatorade but at least I can pick a good flavor and it doesn’t cramp me up.

Miralax/Ducolax prep- instructions easily found on Internet. Rather than Gatorade, I drink Smart Water. Gummie bears (only the yellow and white) and broth get me through without hunger. Easing up on eating a few days ahead of the prep is helpful.
I’ve had many scopes since 2010 dx (don’t even dread them anymore) and this has always worked for me and yielded an “excellent prep” report from my doc. I’m also a fan of the split dose where half is done the night before and rest early morning but requires a midday-ish scope appt. This info can be googled.

Good luck,

Apparently peoples' favorite Ducolax+Miralax+Gatorade is getting a "Tasters Choice" award. :)

Once I even prepared a spreadsheet to compare tonicity of PegLyte and Miralax+Gatorade.
I found that Miralax+Gatorade was not a perfect substitution for PegLyte (and other similar compositions).
However it tasted so good! :)

Are you sure that Smart Water is a good substitution for Gatorade?
Once I briefly studied a list of ingredients on a Smart Water bottle and got a perception that (unlike Gatorade) it was mostly water with very minimal additional electrolytes.

Utwo,
I can’t argue your research but a little Gatorade (or any flavored drink) goes a long way with me so drinking mostly Smart Water has allowed me to drink the necessary amount of liquid and then some. Gatorade only leads to some vomiting. If you like Gatorade, then that’s probably the way to go. I look forward to your recipe details:)

You can find several slightly different versions of Miralax+Gatorade prep on the Internet.
I do not believe that one is significantly better than the others.

Here is one version of Miralax+Gatorade prep, with very elaborate instructions:

A bit late here Helen,
BUTT I've always had just the PicoSalax (Prepopik) until last scope 2016
where the Doc changed the timing and added Dulcolax the first morning.

Never had any issues with cleanout

Just finished the first half of the prep for colonoscopy tomorrow afternoon. I suspect that I'm fairly well cleaned out as I haven't eaten since last night and didn't really have much yesterday overall. Dulcolax at 2 PM, then 1/2 Miralax 8.3 ounce bottle and bottle of Gatorade from 5-6 PM.

One thing about clustering - you get used to sitting on the toilet a lot - it's good practice for colonoscopies.
