Surgeon went over the MRI results with my husband today...the problematic node has gotten slightly bigger...not the news we were hoping for, and it looks like surgery is likely...

My husband met with his oncologist today . . . apparently the biopsy of my husband's fistula area (done during scope) came back as cancerous . . . not at all what we were expecting . . . they want him to start xeloda for 6 weeks, and then break for 6 weeks, and then surgery . . . they will remove the 2 nodes and another section of his colon . . . they are also discussing radiation to the fistula area, but his surgeon and oncologist feel that it would be best to remove that section all together . . . ughhhh . . . not the best news, but also not the worst . . . I just feel so lost right now . . .

Thank you for the hugs!!! My husband's surgeon and onc are on the same page in terms of surgery, but apparently the tumor board is a bit more skittish about it...my husband's onc has asked us to consult with his doc at MSK to get another set of eyes on all of this...he will also be calling her...not much we can do right now, so we're trying not to worry and we're just staying positive...

You have every reason to stay positive with a good team and a well thought out treatment plan coming together . It is also a team wanting the best for him in securing another opinion .

I think it’s very wise to take the time to investigate the best approach then proceed with confidence that the correct path is being taken . It is these well thought out decisions that change outcomes for patients from what I have observed .

I can only imagine how a person going through the treatment feels but as a relative I understand it knocks you sideways and much teeth clenching whilst putting on a brave face . But as my mum always says to us in difficult situations “ Best foot forward one step at a time”. If you need help from your own GP then take all the help you can get . You will centre again and he will get through this but you all need support as you endure it again . It takes much strength as a team but you will get there.
Take care ,
