Describing LAR surgery

Postby teachpdx » Fri Mar 08, 2019 9:58 pm

So I was trying to discuss LAR (rectum removal) with classmates in a Master Gardening class & I described the rectum as a drawstring. So after surgery it is replaced with a snap closure. Anyone else have some other analogies?
4/24/12 RC T3N1M0 age 53
5/23-7/2 - 26 chemorad - Xeloda
7/16 Lynch- MSH2
8/28 LAR w/ temp ileo, CR, 0/11,M0, hysterectomy
10/13 6 cycles Xeloda - completed only 1 1/2 due to HFS
3/12/13 - reversal
8/13 NED
6/15 - HFS gone!

I had my rectum removed and was given a permanent colostomy. Curious, do you still have your rectal muscles? Mine were destroyed thanks to radiation, thus the bag.

I’m curious as well, I had everything removed back there, I call it more of a cement filled enclosure.

OMG!! That is the best description, you nailed it with "cement filled enclosure".

At least for me!!

I’m not the norm but I lost 90% of my rectum in LAR/TME and I’m basically the same as before cancer some 18 months later. Lucky, with “tight sphincter elasticity” (dr. word) and no radiation.
40 y/o male (now 46), kids 11 & 14.
Dx 3/16/17, rectal cancer s3,t3,n1,m0
PROSPCT trial (FOLFOX in lieu of chemorad)
FOLFOX 4/5/17 - 6/26/17
LAR 7/31/17, temp ileo
pathological complete response
Adjuvant chemo cancelled (IDEA Study)
Ileo reversed 9/25/17
NED
1 year scans - clear
2 year scans - clear
3 year scans - clear
4 year scans - clear
5 year scans - clear (considered cured)
