CAT Scan Question

Postby MassMike » Wed Mar 06, 2019 7:43 pm

Does anyone know what a part glass nodule is? My mom just had one pop up on her most recent scan. I'll attach the findings below. Her oncologist doesn't seem concerned, but of course I am. She was sick and getting over an infection prior to her scan, but still. Anyone have any insight on this? Thanks.

Lungs: Central airways patent. New 5 mm part ground-glass nodule right upper lobe (image 53, series 3) suspected to potentially represent mucous plugging. Short interval follow-up is recommended. Other small nodules are stable.
Mom DX Stage 2/3 Rectal Cancer 8/17
Chemoradiation 9/17-11/17
Surgery w/Temp Colostomy 12/12/17
yP Stage T2N0 0/20 nodes
8 cycles folfox begun 1/15/18
Folfox finished 5/18
Reversal 8/18

I can't give you the medical definition or explanation of what it is, but I can tell you that my husband had them show on his lung scans at MDA and our oncologist didn't go into detail, but told us it was nothing even worth mentioning. Nothing ever came of it and were over 8years out NED. I wouldn't worry about them!

58 yo male at diagnosis: T1bN0M0, 0/15 nodes, low grade/moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma
03/2016 colonoscopy: 2 small polyps removed in left colon; CEA = 1.3
04/2016 colonoscopy: caecum sessile 3.5 cm polyp piecemeal removed with kind of clear margins
05/2016 "prophylactic" laparoscopic right hemicolectomy - bleeding, leak, infection
06/2017 CT scan, colonoscopy OK; CEA = 1.6
A lot of funny stuff discovered by CT scans in liver, kidney, lungs, arteries, gallbladder, lymph node, pancreas

It is a description of what the nodule looks like — solid, ground-glass (kinda hazy is how I would describe it) and mixed (both). The guidelines for how frequently a nodule is followed on CT is in part determined by whether it is solid or subsolid (Fleischner Criteria 2017).

In any case, it is <6 mm and will be followed. If it is mucus plugging as they suspect, it should not grow. It could disappear or look the same on the next scan. Take care!

My Dh has had 2 nodules. One has always been there, never grown and is ground glass opacity. The other was just noted as a nodule, popped up after being off chemo for a few months, and it did grow Shrank after going back on chemo, then came back after another break. He had it removed in November. It was a met with the same colorectal origin. The doc was also going to take out that original nodule, just in case. But when he got to it and took a look he said it was nothing and just a calcified lymph node and not even worth removing. That was the ground glass one.
