O/T but I completed my half marathon!

Postby AmyG » Sun Feb 10, 2019 4:55 pm

Hey yall!!!

Today was the day. My time sucked, right at 4 hours for 13.1 miles. However, I'm 33 weeks pregnant, stage 4 and it rained the entire time. I was seriously questioning my life choices the last 3 miles. I was SOAKED. The temperature was mid 30sF and it was the most miserable race I've ever participated in.

I loved every minute.

With each new ache or pain, it was another reminder that I'm alive and in good enough shape to be on the course.

Cancer is going to have to fight a LOT harder than this if it's going to beat me.

Courage to start. Strength to endure. Resolve to finish.

Holy crap am I feeling it now.

I've wrecked myself and it honestly feels wonderful. I'll be totally fine in a day or two, but right now....omfg. Ankles. Knees. Hips. They hate me right now. Stairs are my mortal enemy.

The finisher's medal was pretty cool though as it's also a belt buckle. Only in Arkansas.

One of the oncologists with whom I first met told me that the people who seem to do best with treatment are those that start out in good shape. I guess that would be you!!

Congrats on a great race. Totally inspiring!

What I love about you is your ability to stay totally engaged to your life . That is pretty unique around here . It normally takes time to draw boundaries round cancer. Not with you I think you had it done before leaving the surgeons room .
I was telling your story to a friend who has stage 4 lung cancer and a small family . She has previously had cancer and one of her children has health issues . It made her day .
Take care and get those feet up .

CONGRATS and huge props to you. Been lurking on the board for a while and never posted - but this just made my day so had to reply. Am a runner myself and so far have been lucky enough to keep up short runs and other workouts throughout chemo. Have been wondering about whether I'll be able to do the half marathon that I have on the calendar for May (will be in between radation and surgery) and you are giving me a ton of hope! You're inspiring as to what one can do with the right spirit and approach. Keep it up.

Yes. Yes you can. I believe in you. :D

I signed up for a race series, I need to complete 7 more half marathons between now and the end of next year. I'm hoping to be able to complete my next one this September, but have zero idea what to expect with chemo and possibly a liver resection. No clue if it would be open or not.

Congratulations. - My wife would have given you a big thumbs up. She was a long time runner - Joined her HS Boys CC team when there were no such thing as girls CC. Ran 5, 10K's and half marathons and was training for a marathon when she was diagnosed. The fatigue from Chemo ended her running. She tried to do a 10 K trail run about 7 months after her resection and between rounds of FolFox plus Avastin, but the trails were much more brutal than she thought they would be and she had to pull the plug at the 5K mark. After that she never ran again. I think this was probably the lowest part of her life prior to the end. Still; she remained active just no longer a runner. Ran and trained her dogs, rode her horse and judged field trial events to within a few of weeks of her passing.

To do it in the rain, pregnant is pretty amazing stuff!
