Coffee...yes or no?

Coffee is one of the things I stopped drinking as soon as I was diagnosed, however I’ve been reading a lot of articles that suggest that coffee is actually good for us.

I drank two large coffees every day minimum for years, maybe decades, and obviously it didn’t prevent anything in my case, though maybe it allowed the disease to progress slower than it would have. Who knows.

Anyway I’m just curious to hear / read the opinions of others on coffee consumption post diagnosis.

My coffee consumption is based on it being a vise and nothing else - and I protect this with my whole being. I love coffee and since my surgery consumption of it can cause me to cluster more and recently painful indigestion. I've fixed it with a few tweeks. No more than one cup of coffee on an empty stomach and preferably with some carb such as bread and/or homemade sweet. I also figured out that by using heavy cream instead of milk (in my coffee) much less stomach upset.

I say do what makes you happy because this is a VERY long journey and you being happy is the best thing for YOU.

Peace, Kristi

Coffee was the only thing I enjoyed drinking during chemo - cold drinks/water had a metallic taste and I had to force them down. If I had to give up my morning coffee, I would have been really depressed.

So my take is, that it was beneficial to my mental health, during a time when I neeed a boost, and is probably neither good or bad as far as general health is concerned.

In the following article it says that "early research suggested that coffee increased the risk of bladder cancer, but the true causal factor was later found to be smoking". (coffee and smoking can go hand in hand)

It then goes on to say "Recent studies find that coffee may lower the risk of several types of cancer, including head and neck, colorectal, breast, and liver cancer, although the potential beneficial effects of coffee are not completely understood"
https://www.cancer.org/latest-news/coff ... shows.html

So I will second Kristi and say thumbs up to coffee - enjoy! 

Many years ago, when I worked in downtown Denver, CO. As a female, I was told to not drink coffee as it can cause breast cancer. A few years back I was told to drink 2 cups of coffee (or more) a day as we now know it can actually help prevent breast cancer. This was per a GYN visit.

I love coffee, butt as I get older, anything more than 1 cup a day causes one of my eyes to twitch big time. Very annoying!!

Drink and eat what you want. If you already have cancer, it's certainly not going to make it worse. If you don't, it's certainly not going to cause you to get it. Unless you grow your own food and control it from seed to harvest, you really have little say in what's going into your body. From the genetically modified foods to the chemicals put on it in the fields, our food supply is polluted. Think eating organic is the answer? Not unless you can independently verify that the claim of being organic on that product is valid.

I only drink decaf. Does that actually count as coffee?

I will never give up coffee. Ever. I like coffee better than food.

That is SO TRUE!!! Sorry butt I've seen some of the chemicals that go into the ground prior to planting. Some of those farmers claim to be "organic" Butt at least the customer feels good about what they are buying for a premium $$$

There is a small market here, that sells only greens. They grow vertical, lite weight plants. They might be onto the right solutions. Butt you gotta eat greens, and only greens!!

I read an article that cited lower recurrence rates of colon cancer among coffee drinkers. That was enough for me to feel fine maintaining my habit. I went off the taste of plain coffee with cream a few cycles in, but still liked lattes. And I drank a LOT of eggnog lattes during my chemo break trying to get my weight up. Worked for me!

My husband loves coffee, but for some reason after his surgery he has been unable to drink it. It causes severe diarrhea! Even being over 8 years out, still happens. I guess it's Gods way of telling him hot to drink it. No problems at all with tea. Go figure.

And I am just not willing to do that. I love to eat. You put it in front of me and I will eat it (except guacamole - that stuff just doesn't look right). After going through of year of absolute hell, I'm gonna eat what I want.

After my right hemicolectomy I discovered that coffee had rather strong laxative effect.
Prior to my surgery I had no clue that coffee was supposed to have such effect.

Coffee laxative effect is rather strong in my case. :(
When I am in the office I need a few cups of coffee through the day, that leads to a few extra trips to a bathroom.
The obvious solution is to stay at home and do not drink coffee.
Unfortunately I can't afford to retire right now and still need to work.

Can you think of another way of dealing with this issue?
Do you believe that different ways of coffee preparation have different laxative effects?
For example, have you noticed any difference between black coffee and coffee with milk, between dripping coffee, espresso and instant coffee, between dark roast and light roast?

Does tea have similar laxative effect or not?
I am willing to trade coffee for tea for my caffeine fix.

Absolutely nothing wrong with drinking coffee, unless you just never liked it.
