Beckman-Coultier CEA assays

Postby del » Fri Dec 14, 2018 12:01 am

I've seen a lot of talk about Roche vs Bayer CEA measurements. My hospital was using Roche but recently switched to a new measurement called Beckman-Coultier:

From the 2nd September 2018 tumour markers for AFP, CEA, CA 19-9, CA 153, CA 125 are measured on the Beckman-Coultier DxI analyser.

Does anyone know much about Beckman-Coultier measurements? My level has dropped from 1.2 to 0.5, which is good, but I am just curious whether this is due to the change in methodology.

The Beckman-Coulter DXL is just the instrument that they use to read the resulting immunoassay results from the Assay Kit. The individual Assay Kit could be from any number of Immunoassay test manufacturers. The instrument just reads the plate or vials. Typically these are fluorescent, or radiolabeled assays, and the instrument is getting a count. Generating the number vs a standard. Roche and Bayer make instruments for reading these test kits results as well. The differences in results between instruments is most likely due to the sensitivity of their detectors. In all instruments they run standards. So given the same test kit and standards the only difference would be in the sensitivity and accuracy of the instrument.

Here is a link to the BeckmanCoulter instrument web site: https://www.beckmancoulter.com/en/products/immunoassay

if you scroll down you will see links to the Assay tests they sell to be used with these instruments.

Here are web sites for a few providers of the CEA test kits. This is just a few.

Finally here is a paper that describes some new methods for more accurate CEA detection in smokers.
It was published in July 2018.
