Postby Trying » Wed Dec 12, 2018 12:12 am

Have any of you had unrecectable mets treated wiith radiation? I'm just wondering why my Dr. Hasn't mentioned it yet? Thanks!

I asked about radiation to the liver mets when I was first diagnosed, and the answer was that radiation to the liver usually does more harm than good. I'm guessing because it harms healthy liver tissue, further reducing liver function. I don't know if that is still true, particularly with proton beam radiation now available. Have you asked about microwave/RF ablation?

You may also want to look for a provider like MSK that offers hepatic arterial infusion (HAI). There are many members on this board that were able to be resected after the HAI treatment shrunk the tumors enough.

Hi! I got diagnosed with 10+ unresectable mets in JUne 2015. I was devastated. Being so sick at just 40 with 6 years old twins... All the doctors I saw gave me maximum 2 years if I responded to chemo. Browsing "colon cancer survivors" I found a very few old timers success stories and 1 name that repeated several times. It was Dr. Kemeny's name. In August 2015 I became her patient, started chemo. 4 surgeries later in less than a year since diagnosis I was clear, NED I so much craved. I am still NED, living my life. I highly recommend Dr. Kemeny and her HAI pump, her surgeons and the whole MSKCC team. Good luck!
mom of now 14 years old twins, dx @ 40 in 6/2015 with upper rectal cancer, 10+ liver mets, CEA 140
chemo: 8/2015 - 10/2016 - 4xFOLFIRINOX, 2xFOLFOX, 8xFOLFIRI, 10x5FU, HAI pump -12xFUDR
4 surgeries, complete pathological response
CEA<2 since 10/2015
NED since May 2016

I praise God for every day with my family!

One of my liver mets was very very near a major artery. My sugeon at MSKCC would not even consider a liver resection until that met was taken care of (as it was on an artery and he could not resect it.) My wonderful Interventional Radiologist at MSKCC did a procedure called irreversible electroporation on the tumor in February 2013. It worked and has never come back. (It works near arteries when other ablation methods will not because the blood in the artery keeps the tumor from getting hot enough via the other methods. This method doesn't require heat to kill the tumor and is often effective when other ablation methods are not.)

Irreversible Electroporation for Treatment of Liver Cancer

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov › … › v.7(5); 2011 May

Irreversible Electroporation for Treatment of Liver Cancer. Using this technology, a cell is subjected to a powerful electrical field using high-voltage direct current (up to 3 kV); this creates multiple holes in the cell membrane and irreversibly damages the cell's homeostasis mechanism, leading to instant cell death.

DH has SRBT done in December 2017 on 4 liver Mets. He has been a year free of Mets to the liver since then and just had a good scan. So yes, it can be done. I think 4-5 is the max they like to treat though. So it might. Red to be used with other treatments.

Hi Trying,
My husband also had SBRT on a single liver met a year ago (the met was too close to the IVC to resect surgically). He has been NED since (last scan was yesterday). His radiation oncologist told us there is a 90%+ success rate in the procedure killing the tumor completely and that if it were to come back, they would just zap it again.

Good luck!
