Help me decipher these lab comments?!?

Postby melissadc76 » Tue Dec 11, 2018 12:52 pm

The original surgeon did a biopsy after an emergency colostomy due to complete bowel blockage.
New surgeon at Huntsman ordered the pathology report and had their pathologist view the slide/cells. Could anyone help explain/decipher this? This is the original cancer diagnosis and I have no idea what it means or if I'm missing something. TIA for your help.

Melissa

COLON, SIGMOID MASS AT 30 CM, BIOPSY:

- AT LEAST HIGH GRADE DYSPLASIA, CANNOT EXCLUDE ADENOCARCINOMA. SEE COMMENT.

Sections contain superficial fragments of dysplastic colonic epithelium with cribriforming architecture and high grade cytology, consistent with at least high grade dysplasia. Other fragments of
colonic mucosa have no significant abnormality. There are no areas of definitive desmoplasia or obvious invasion. However, these superficial fragments may not be representative of a mass seen
endoscopically.

Per report, immunohistochemical stains for mismatch repair proteins MLH1, PMS2, MSH2, and MSH6 showed normal expression.

These results seem to be neither positive or negative.
I can offer you my experience as it sounds similar.
My mum had an emergency colostomy due to blockage as well. She had 6 negative tests until they found the mass on an MRI about a year after her colostomy. They then did a CT guided needle biopsy to gain a positive biopsy for adenocarcinoma. I can only wish it hadn’t taken a year to get the proper biopsy. I also wish we had a PET scan sooner.
Caregiver for Mum (67)
