RESTRICTIONS ON IMMODIUM SALE

Postby Bob_Weiss » Fri Nov 16, 2018 4:34 pm

The N.Y.Times had an article that I recently read indicating that the FDA is considering restrictions on Immodium. The reason is that addicts may use this drug when their preferred illegal opiate drug (heroin, etc.) is not available. This is a HORRIBLE idea for patients that depend on Immodium to control their bowel problems.

Immodium users should consider writing/calling their congressional representatives to protest this move. We will be paying higher prices and have more difficulties getting this drug in the future.

Isn't this crazy? I read some will take up to 300 Imodium to get high. There are stores that already have Imodium behind the counter. I know Costco does. I use lomotil, and in the last year my doctor cannot call in the prescription anymore. I have to go to his office and pick up the script and take it to the pharmacy. I cannot imaging taking that many Imodium. Those individuals must be pretty constipated. I only take 2 lomotil a day.

It's already started. I purchase the Kirkland generic loperamide from Amazon. Last February, I bought 400 tablets for US$66. I looked at the prices today and saw they were going for fifty cents a pill. A bottle of 200 costs US$100. The price has tripled in less than a year. Other brands show similar increases. In my opinion, they are trying to curb abuse by making the cost prohibitive. Needless to say, they are also making a good profit on the markup.

You have to take a lot of Imodium to get high. Limiting the sale of Imodium isn’t going to affect those who are taking it appropriately for diarrhea. It’s no different than when they limited the sales of Sudafed. It doesn’t affect those that aren’t cooking it down for meth. Those that need it will still be able to buy it and use it for its intended purpose.

Here's an interesting take on the issue: https://www.acsh.org/news/2018/01/30/runs-imodium-fda-clamps-down-12497. Comments are interesting too.

I saw articles on this from 2016 to 2018.

I have not had problems buying it from Amazon but larger quantities would be more convenient as would a bottle instead of the blister packs which are a pain to open.

I generally take no more than two per week as two will give my constipation for three days. But I realize that there are other folks with LARS that need more of them. It may be that I do take more in the future to better manage LARS. I don't really see a problem with access at this time.

They really need to stop selling rubbing alcohol, as some people drink that to get high !
