Mass in sigmoid colon and one ovary

Postby Amarie123 » Wed Nov 14, 2018 10:36 am

Hello- I'm new here and newly diagnosed with colorectal cancer on 10/24. I have a partially/mostly obstructing mass in my sigmoid colon, which is scheduled to be removed surgically on 11/21. The CT scan and MRI show a "suspicious mass" on one ovary, so they will be performing a full hysterectomy as well. I had a much more positive outlook before I knew anything was up with my ovary. Now I'm much more scared, though hopeful that surgery and chemo/radiation will do the job. I know this is overall rare but more common with pre-menopausal women. I didn't know if anyone on here has had a similar experience? I am so thankful to have found this community as the information - mostly research articles - online is not exactly reassuring. Thanks in advance for any advice you might have.

Hi and welcome, sorry for the reason you are here.

Yes other women have had there ovaries effected by colon cancer. Many would become NED (No Evidence of Disease), so please do not give up on hope. If you want, you can use the search engine on the top left side and input colon cancer and met to ovary.

You will find a wealth of information and support here. Avoid Dr. Google, many time the information is out of date or flat wrong.

Keep us posted,

rectal cancer - April 2004
46 yrs old at diagnoses
stage III C - 6/13 lymph positive
radiation - 6 weeks
surgery - August 2004/hernia repair 2014
permanent colostomy
chemo - FOLFOX
NED - 16 years and counting!

Did they do a PET scan on the suspicious mass (if it was big enough)?

Reason I ask is my mom’s MRI showed a suspicious mass in her internal iliac region which turned out to BE her ovary.
Although it was enlarged it didn’t show any uptake on a PET.

In doing research about colon cancer mets to ovaries, it is possible and has happened to folks on this board but is also not common.

There is also a chance it could be a new primary ovarian cancer, which, although that sounds scary, is actually better than being a met from colon cancer if it’s early stage.

But it could also be nothing. And regardless they are going to take care of it in the surgery.

You’ll be in my prayers. Please keep us posted.

Thank you for your responses.

I did not have a PET scan and instead consented to have the full hysterectomy, which after the MRI the surgeon confirmed was her choice as well. I have three kids and my tubes tied, so to me it felt like the best solution. It's a small mass on my ovary so they aren't entirely sure if it is separate or if it is the mass from my colon extending to the ovary (so it looks like its on the ovary but is really all colon). It is very up in the air right now which is what makes it so scary.

The good part is from what they saw on the CT and MRI, it has not spread to liver, bladder, pancreas, lungs, etc. It's not good to spread anywhere but my hope is that with removal and chemo this is not as dire as it sounds. Thank you! It's definitely more helpful to hear from other people rather than Dr. Google, who I agree is either outdated or filled with the darkest information you can find.

My colon cancer was in my colon and on one ovary at diagnosis. I had surgery to remove the colon and ovary and did 6 months of folfox as adjuvant chemo and they were hopeful I was cured, sadly my first scan after the chemo showed it was then on my other ovary. So great plan that they intend to do the hysterectomy from the get go. I wish my surgeon had done that. I hope you get the cure I wished for. Best of luck. Keep us posted.

Not the same as your situation, but after my CT scan they were concerned that the colon inflammation was too close to my uterus and warned me there was a possibility that they would need to perform a hysterectomy as well. I am 48 and definitely getting into menopause so I said that would be okay with me; I'd rather get rid of any danger points, and I could deal with getting thrown straight into menopause. In the end they were able to separate things cleanly, and the hysterectomy was not needed. But clearly sometimes they will perform a hysterectomy as a precaution.

They did remove a uterine fibroid while they were in there; it was nice to get that done at the same time.

Just wanted to update that I had a successful sigmoid rescection surgery as well as a full hysterectomy last week. They found the masses on myvovary and uterus were benign which was great news! I was still just as happy to have the hysterectomy so I’m glad we agreed in advance to the procedure. Thanks for your helpful answers and input!
