Another ER trip today

Postby DarknessEmbraced » Mon Nov 12, 2018 8:11 pm

Last night I had horrible cramping, sweating, liquid diarrhea lasting several hours, and dry heaves. I saw blood today in little specks of stool like the last time and blood on the toilet paper. I was also dehydrated with orange urine. I went to the ER. I was given a shot of dilaudid, fluids by iv, buscopan by iv(made my vision blurry for an hour or so), and zofran. I had chest, abdominal and pelvic x-rays. I also had an abdominal CT scan, blood work and a urine test. I was told that I have gastroenteritis which is inflammation in the GI tract. I was told to eat bland foods, stay hydrated. use Advil, tylenol and heat. Also to use buscopan for cramping. The buscopan shortage here is going to last until December 15th or longer. I only have 9 left and have to use them very sparingly. Heat and tylenol don't help. I can't take Advil or any other NSAIDS because they make my high blood pressure worse. I'm planning on going back to liquids only. I wish they had done a colonoscopy at the ER because that would have shown more than the x-rays and CT scans. I have to wait until November 21st to see the GI. I'm in a lot of pain right now with cramping and starting to feel nauseous again. I hope I can convince the GI to a colonoscopy. These symptoms are like what I had with ischemic colitis. To me it doesn't make sense that this is gastroenteritis because why would I get it at the end of July, in October and now? This is very frustrating!

I’m sorry this is happening. Any chance you can keep calling to see if you can get squeezed in due to a cancellation?

Darkness embraced,

So sorry to hear you are sick again. I have been seeing your posts about the visits to the ER and it must be terrible not to get any answers. As someone who has worked for a number of years in ERs I think you should keep seeking medical attention when you have a flare and make a fuss if needed. Doctors don't always get it right, and they often don't realise when they are out of their depth. Gastroenteritis (in most cases) does not require dilaudid to treat the pain and thats a red flag that maybe there is something more going on and as you pointed out- three episodes causing severe pain and cramping like your ischaemic colitis doesn't really make sense if its just gastroenteritis.

Stick to your guns and be the squeaky wheel until you get some answers,

Good luck and hope you're feeling ok,

Violet

Thank you everyone! Unfortunately, I have to wait until my appointment to see the GI. They won't squeeze me in if there's a cancellation because I have been triaged as low priority. I believe it's more than gastroenteritis as well. I don't understand how it can have the same symptoms as ischemic colitis but that not be the case. I will keep going to the ER when I have rectal bleeding because I was always told it needs investigation. I want to convince my GI to do a colonoscopy because I believe that's the only way I will get answers.
