Hospitals that install HAI pump?

Postby cartech78 » Sun Oct 28, 2018 4:44 pm

Hi everyone, My Question is does anyone know of any hospitals that install HAI pumps not Named MSKCC? I’m aware that the old style codeman pump is no longer made but im curios to know if any other hospitals closer to the Chicago area are using the new
Medtronic pump? I am very interested in this treatment and looking for a way to make it more feasible for myself then traveling from Chicago to New York every 2 weeks. Don’t get me wrong, if thats what needs to be done then i will manage.
Thanks in advance for any info you may have!

Colon resection 10/6/18 clean margins
Starting FolFox on 11/18
2nd opinion at MSK on 12/18
HAI pump installed on 3/6/2019 also found 20 more small tumors on liver scans missed
7/2/2019 MRI and CT show only 2 liver tumors visible and they are shrunk by 3/4
11/25/19- Liver resection at MSK- got out all cancer and am NED. More scans and mop up chemo to follow.

Hi ,
I can’t contribute to the question as I am from the U.K. However I do want to just say well done for seeking out the windows of opportunity that are available for you .
Do what you need to do to get to surgery . My mum has had over ten mets removed from her liver and it’s remain clear for over seven years . The right input can make the world of difference .
All the very best ,

Thanks Stu, I actually have followed a couple of your post about your mom. I think its great what you are doing for her and that you continue to come here with her inspirational story. It gives me a great deal of hope in these dark days. May God continue to bless you and your family.

Please do continue to research HAI. From your sig line, it really is something you need to look into. This message board was hugely instrumental in my learning about this procedure. Our local hospital doesn't offer it, and our local oncologist never mentioned it as an option. We had to find out about it on our own. Since the search function here requires multiple search terms, try some combination of "HAI", "Kemeny", "MSK". Also, search for board members "juliej", "mariane". "hiker". You'll find so many other posters here who have been HAI patients.

There is a lot of information on the various Facebook CRC groups, too (there is a Colontown subgroup devoted to HAI).

Closest facility to Chicago to do HAI is, I believe, Cleveland Clinic. Hope you find something that will work for you!

Dr Regina Stein at Northwestern is the one who mentioned to me about the new pump (when I mentioned it being discontinued). I have chemo tomorrow, I will ask if they administer it there or you would need to go elsewhere like Cleveland Clinic. (They did not mention a pump to me when I went there for my second opinion, not sure why.)

That would be amazing if you could ask as i literally work 10 minutes away for the Village of Skokie. If She tells you yes they do it , i will jump all over it. I am calling MSK tomorrow to find out what I can from them and who else might use them. These things have made a lot of people go from stage 4 to NED or at least given them a couple extra years. I would of never known of them without thus site! Lets rid ourselves of this terrible disease .

Please post here if you find out who else manages Medtronic pump programs! I’ll try to do some of my own research as well. This will be helpful to me as I think about how long I want to keep and maintain my pump. I am sure that more and more pump programs will be switching to it as it comes online.

Mass General Hospital lists the following services including the HAI pump:

- Advanced surgical techniques to resect high risk liver masses, including ex-vivo resections (taking the liver out of the body, removing a mass and putting it back in)
- Minimally invasive operations, including laparoscopic and robotic liver resections
- Hepatic artery infusion pumps for unresectable liver cancers
- High-dose radiation with either protons or photons to downstage liver cancers so patients can undergo an operation
- Microwave or radiofrequency ablation of liver tumors, a minimally invasive procedure that uses heat to destroy cancer cells
- Nannoknife (irreversible electroporation) where an electric current destroys cancer cells

My mother has the old pump. Yes, msk is now doing Medtronic. I do know that it needs to be serviced more often than what my mom has but it works. It still gets FUDR into the liver.

Wow thats Quite a signiture line you have for her! She seems like a strong lady to kick Cancers ass that many times. Today i had my oncologist call MSK for a refferal to Dr Kemeny. As far as i can tell she is the only one installing the new ones as of now. If i have to from Chicago to NewYork every 2 weeks so be it. Better then being dead in my early 40s . Godbless you and your mom.

Cartech, do you know your KRAS mutation? If you are KRAS wild, you may be able to get into Dr Kemeny's clinical trial, which uses the Codman pump and only has to be serviced every six weeks. Did they say anything about that when you called them?

I reread the original post and see that you were looking for something closer to Chicago so MGH wouldn't really help (outside of slightly less traffic). I only found out when I did a search on Mass General Hospital and Hepatic Arterial Pump and found the page. It may be that a similar search for hospitals closer to you and that are top cancer hospitals would find some other positive hits.
