MRI: No evidence for recurrent or metastatic disease. CAT SCAN: Lung nodules are all stable going back many years. No new or enlarging nodules. (He actually says later benign since first scan in Jan. 2009).

I can't begin to tell you how much this specific 'date' means to me! A study done in 2015 cited numbers that says

After 6.48 years, patients alive without tumor recurrence can be considered cured with 99 % certainty.

Solitary Colorectal Liver Metastasis Resection Determines Outcome

Researchers at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas
prospectively studied patients with a first solitary liver metastasis who
were treated either with hepatic resection or radiofrequency ablation. ....

A present study shows an 80% 3-year survival rate (and a 71% 5-year survival
rate) after HR and well-established data showing 10- and 20-year survivors
after HR of solitary and multiple metastases, even without adjuvant
chemotherapy
This study dispels the thought process that other methods, such as radiation, are as curative as hepatic resection.

Warning: Christian remark so if this offends you, stop reading at this line.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have to Praise the LORD for my healing and am so thankful for every day He has seen fit to give me. May I honor Him by using this time to help others who are dealing with cancer by bringing them hope.
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us – whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked of Him.” 1 John 5:14-15
James 5:14-16 “Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”
Thank you for this! All of it! I just had a liver resection in a met which was written up to be two small ones (looked like a dumbbell). I really hope those stats are correct and this Is oliometastatic disease.
Congrats! And enjoy life!
Wow. Your post gives me a lot to think about. If those numbers are true, then the stats for liver resection are higher/ more positive than the stats for those with an HAI pump.
So here's a question. Yesterday a surgeon told me that a partial resection and HAI pump would put my 5-year survival rate back up to 50 percent. However, when I asked about my chances for "cure" and getting to retirement she said that my chances for surviving long term were "very small."
The math doesn't seem to add up. I need realistic expectations. Are my chances of say, still being alive in 15 years really "very small (10 percent or less)?
I think perhaps you misunderstand the role of an HAI pump. The pump is implanted with either a. the goal of shrinking the mets so that the liver becomes resectable or b. as adjuvant therapy post-resection to prevent recurrence.
In both cases, the idea is to clear the liver of mets. I can only imagine your surgeon is suggesting the pump, so that your liver eventually becomes resectable.
All treatment options being presented to you are aggressive and proactive. All you (and they) can deal with right now is what's in front of you. No one knows what the picture will look like in 5 years, so try not to think too much about that. Just get through this current treatment first. You're lucky in that your doctors are not simply prescribing chemo by itself; they're fighting to give you a chance. Best of luck with your treatment!
You are not the first person to tell me that I am thinking too far into the future. I wish that it were so easy for me to do that. As long as someone can help me feel that a decision I make now won't mean that I am limiting my options for the future I will try very hard to learn how to do that.
