RFA for lung met

Postby kandj » Thu Oct 04, 2018 6:20 pm

DH had a little nodule that had grown last July when they also found 4 more liver mets. Dr. K was less concerned about the nodule so the focus was on the liver Mets. He had 3 weeks of radiation on the lung Mets and several months of chemo (August 2017- May of 2018). The lung nodule disappeared after 3 chemos and it wasn’t noted again. Until Monday. It has come back and is 6mm. So quite small. His oncologist wants it removed (CT scan said follow closely). I agree with her though, just get it out.

So, if you had RFA how was it? How was the recovery? Inpatient or outpatient. Would especially love to hear from those that had it done at MSKCC.

Also, did you have chemo before the procedure? dr. K wants him to start 5fu again as the procedure isn’t until late November. I’m worried that the met will shrink and they won’t be able to ablate it. Just to then have it come back again. Ugh.

I had VATS not RFA for my small lung met - easy surgery. In my case the met was deep, so nuclear material was inserted under CT guidance and then during surgery the surgeon went for the "hotspot" - that was back in 2008. Recovery was easy. I suspect, but do not know, that RFA recovery is also relatively "easy". Elected to do Xeloda + Avastin post surgery, but that was my choice and others might make a different one.

We did the "watch and wait" thing without chemo before surgery, since I was off it anyway. The size did not change from 11/08 (when first detected) until 4/09 when resected.

Take care,
Betsy
