Training after reversal (running)

Postby Atoq » Sat Sep 01, 2018 2:20 pm

One year ago I ran 10 km in a race and my average was 4’22’’ per km, not my best time, but not bad given my age  two weeks later I was diagnosed with rectal cancer.

Today I ran the same race, my pace was 4’44’’ per km, I haven’t been training a lot obviously, also because I was on holiday for almost two months and then here is full of mushrooms, so the trip to the forest is prioritized.

I am happy with the outcome and celebrating with a glass of Brunello di Montalcino. In two weeks I will have a scope and know the results of last CAT scan.

Have a nice weekend all of you!

4'44"/km = 284"/km * 1 km/0.62 mi = 458"/mi = 7'38"/mi which is quite good for recreational running.

Atoq:
Find celebration within your heart for a race and distance well completed. Celebrate all that your body is doing well.

Long distance running was always my go-to source of inate solace and personal well-being. There is something to be said for the simplicity of opening the front door and heading out for a run. The only equipment required is a pair of running shoes. One foot in front of the other. The sound of one’s breath - in/out - as a metronome.

Keep on keeping on. You are to be commended for your running efforts in light of your recent treatments and medical interventions.

Claudia, congrats!!! That is awesome.

I ran/walked my first 6k just a couple of weeks before ending up in the hospital with what turned out to be colon cancer. I'm pretty lackadaisical about training; I do best when I sign up for a training group at the local running shop. I would like to get to a point where I could run a whole 5k without doing any walking; I don't care if I'm not very fast. I get out of breath pretty easily after each folfox treatment, so at this point I'm just trying to walk each evening.

I hope the results from your next scope and scan look great!
DX: sigmoid colon cancer 5/2018. 48 F
laparoscopic sigmoid resection (24 cm removed); no stoma.
7.5cm adenocarcinoma -- mod. diff.
1 noncontiguous tumor deposit removed; 0/31 lymph nodes
T3 pN1c M0
5/18 before surgery, CEA 11.2
6/18 began FOLFOX
7/18: CEA 1.9; added neulasta post infusion
9/18: CEA 2.8
10/18: 25% chemo reduction
11/18: CEA 1.8
7/19 CT scan clear
